Legally Blonde did not successfully prepare Jules for how freaking big Harvard was. Neither did the tours that he took beforehand, the research he did about the campus, or the map he currently had in his hand.
"Government with Rhodes, Government with Rhodes," he muttered, checking his schedule again. "The issue is, where the hell is it?"
Sighing, Jules pulled out his phone and checked the time. He still had twenty minutes---he'd specifically woken up early in case he ran into this.
He spotted one of the older students passing by and stopped them. "Hey, do you know where to get to Rhodes's class?"
They gave him a snotty look. "Find it yourself. I've got better things to do than to help freshmen."
Jules blinked. "Um. Okay, then."
As they left, his Anomaly instincts rudely reminded him that they were there. He could just chase after them, stop them, and tell them to take him to Rhodes's class, and they'd do it, no problem. And if they were late for their own class, well, sucks to be---
"Nope," Jules muttered out loud, shaking his head. "I am a regular human being. I do not have freaky powers. That's the entire reason why I want to be a lawyer."
Law meant good career, which meant he could move as far away from his parents as he could, and officially ditch the responsibility of being in charge of a cult someday. And with enough luck, he could find some way to become Auggie's guardian, so he wouldn't have to deal with them, either.
Jules's face felt a little naked without the sunglasses he always wore. He'd given them to Auggie right before he left---just as a little memento. Right now, he was considering buying another pair, but they'd probably end up getting confiscated or someth---
WHAM.
"Oh, god, I'm sorry," the woman he'd just ran into said, kneeling down to grab the stack of books she'd been carrying. "I wasn't looking where I was going."
"Nah, it's fine, I wasn't, either," Jules assured her, handing her a couple of her books. "I think the fault goes to the both of... us." He trailed off as she lifted her head.
She was seriously cute---light brown skin, frizzy brown hair, and light hazel eyes in a heart-shaped face. A pair of rhinestoned glasses rested on her face, and she was a little bit shorter than him (not that that was saying much---Jules had always been tall for his age).
"Cat got your tongue?" she asked, smirking.
"Uh, nope, I can speak," he answered, smiling. "I'm Julian, by the way. Julian Macklemore. But, uh, you can call me Jules."
She stuck out her hand. "Kayla Marshall. Pleased to meet you."
"Same." Jules shook it. "So, uh, where were you headed before I rudely ran into you?"
"Um..." Kayla checked her schedule. "Government with Rhodes."
Holy shit.
"That's where I was headed!"
"Really? Small world." She paused. "Well, small campus."
Jules let out a laugh. "Yeah, well, I can't find my way around it to save my life. Do you know where you're going?"
Kayla shook her head. "'Fraid not. I've tried asking others, but, well, everyone's weirdly adverse to helping out freshmen."
"Oh, yeah, I just experienced that." Jules scratched the back of his neck. "So, uh, seeing as we're both hopelessly lost, should we try wandering around aimlessly together?"
