"I'm home!" Warren called out. She slung her backpack across the room and shut the front door behind her.

Her mom's voice shouted back, "In the kitchen!"

Warren loosened her uniform tie and sniffed the air as she walked in. It wasn't often that her mother cooked, but there was Kendra Walker, straining an enormous serving of pasta over the sink.

"How was your last day?" the woman asked from behind a haze of steam.

Warren took a seat on one of the sleek bar-stools that lined the counter. She shrugged. "Fine, I guess."

"Really?" Her mom raised a skeptical eyebrow.

"Yup."

"Why do I find that hard to believe."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Kendra rolled her eyes and plopped a mountain of spaghetti on a plate. "Oh, I don't know. Maybe there's something you wanted to tell me?"

Warren looked at the floor evasively. "Nope."

"Huh...because I just had a very interesting conversation with Principal Savage."

Warren tried to stay strong, but she cracked. "Okay, fine! But Rebecca Berkowitz started it! She's had it out for me since the first day of class."

"So you broke her nose?"

"Only a little..."

Kendra sighed and walked around the counter. She wrapped Warren in her arms and rested her chin on top of her head.

"I'm sorry," Warren mumbled.

"What am I gonna do with you?"

"Let me drop out and start my career as the world's youngest prize fighter?"

"Not a chance," Kendra smirked and ruffled her daughter's hair. She unwrapped her arms and grabbed her plate, then took a seat at the counter.

Warren eyed the mountain of food. "Carbo-loading?" she asked.

Her mom nodded around a forkful of pasta. "Big fight tomorrow night. My rematch against the Red Queen."

"Right, I forgot. I bet Percy will be watching."

Kendra gave her a sly smile. She thought it was cute how often Warren spoke of her friends, Percy in particular. Even though half of the time she was complaining about how annoying he was.

"Well in that case," she winked, "I'll really put the hurt on her."

Warren grinned and dragged her thumb across her throat. "Off with her head."

"Maybe you can stay for the match? Play hookie from camp for a few days."

"Really?" Warren raised her eyebrows. "I just assumed, ya know, with the attacks and all..."
