To Close of A Call

It had been a few days since Georgie had found Pumpkin, and she had bonded well with the puppy, even though she didn't exactly want a dog at first. So far she had managed to keep Pumpkin hidden; surprisingly it wasn't as hard as she thought it would be.

Pumpkin was very well behaved, for Georgie at least. And usually knew when she needed to hide in Georgie's bag. Today was the same as usual and Georgie was getting ready to go to the pavilion to meet her two best friends to practice makeup techniques that she needed for this play. "Alright Pumpkin in." Georgie commands quietly as not to draw attention to herself.

Pumpkin quickly got in the bag letting Georgie zip it most of the way. Georgie then walks down the stairs, seeing both her mother and father sitting on the couch, looking at her. Georgie groans quietly, not this again. Her family always had to choose the worse time to have a family talk.

"Mom, dad I really have to go. Lily and Ethan are meeting me at the park to practice" Georgie told them as she had Pumpkin in her bag, and she hated being late for meeting her friends. Thankfully they didn't fight her about, and Georgie sighs in relief as she goes out the door and goes to her car.

"Good girl Pumpkin I swear that was once again that was to close." Georgie told the pup letting her out of the bag and putting her in the backseat. "Stay Pumpkin." Georgie told Pumpkin who groans, but remains in the backseat.

At the park Georgie clipped the leash on Pumpkin. "Come on Pumpkin." The pup happily jumped out of the car sniffing the air, before following Georgie to the pavilion. Where her two friends were sitting. "Hey Lil, hey Eath. Sorry I'm late." Georgie told them, as she quickly sets up the makeup.

"Hey G, hey Pumpkin, and it's fine, and how did you get all that makeup I thought you got fired." Lily asked making Georgie chuckle. "Lily slow down, yes I did get fired but I have a savings account, and I was running low on makeup so I decided to grab some more." Georgie told Lily, as she finished setting up the makeup.

Pumpkin was getting bored and annoyed, that no one was paying attention to her so she barks, making Georgie laugh. "What Diva Dog, am I not paying enough attention to you?" Georgie playfully asks the puppy placing Pumpkin on her lap, as she picked up one of the makeup brushes. "Alright Lily do me a favor and hold still this time. I don't have enough makeup to mess up on this." Georgie told her friends as she started on Lilly's makeup.

Half an hour later Georgie had finished both of her friends makeup looking at her work, "Alright tell me what you think." Georgie told her friends handing them her compact mirror.

"Why did you get fired? Georgie, this is the most amazing job you've done ever! No one would be able to recognize me." Lily told her making Georgie laugh playfully rolling her eyes, " Oh please I'm not that good!" Georgie told her friends as there was only so much enthusiasm she could take.

"Lily's not wrong G this is amazing. I can't believe you've been turned down, by so many people." Ethan told Georgie who sighs, " I don't know I guess the right person hasn't found me yet. But I don't want a job right now I have to take care of Pumpkin." Georgie told her friend petting the sleeping dog on her lap.

"Speaking of Pumpkin. Has your parents found out about her yet?" Lily asks Georgie who shakes her head, "Not yet, Diva Dog is actually very good at staying on the down low, I've only had a few close calls, but those close calls were to close for comfort." Georgie told the others as she puts Pumpkin on the ground. The dog barking in resentment.

Georgie rolled her eyes at the pup, "What you can't stay on me all day." Georgie told Pumpkin who groaned, but went back to playing with a stick. "Are you going to tell your mother and father about Pumpkin?" Ethan asked Georgie who immediately shakes her head.

"Are you crazy! If they saw her, they would make me take her to a shelter, and I don't want that. I'm just going to have to keep hiding her until I can get a job, and get out of here."

" You hiding her for who knows how long. Georgie do I have to remind you what happened last time you tried that?" Ethan told Georgie. Who sighs, of course she knew this, but she had to try.

"Trust me I know that, but I have to try. Fifty-six percent of dogs that end up in shelters are euthanized. I can't let that happen to Pumpkin. And for the record the last time we were sixteen, we're eighteen now I should be able to hide her easier" Georgie told Ethan uncertainly as she started taking the makeup off of her friends, still keeping an eye on Pumpkin who cocked her head as if saying "What."

Lily laughed at the way Pumpkin was looking at Georgie. "You know if your parents find out you and Pumpkin can stay with me until the play. I wouldn't mind." Lily tells Georgie as she loved Pumpkin just as much as she did as the white dog reminded her of her first, and she wanted to protect her as well.

"Thanks Lil. I might have to take you up on that." Georgie told Lily, as she knew her parents were going to find out sooner or later, and probably sooner at this point, as Georgie was not the best when it came to hiding things.

Georgie then looked at her clock on the phone. "I better go you two. I'll see you in the morning. Pumpkin come." Georgie says taking the puppy's leash in her hand heading to the car.

At home Georgie made sure her dog was safely in the bag before walking in her house where her mother and father were still sitting in the living room. It looked like they hadn't moved at all since she left. "Great! Pumpkin quiet looks like we're going to cut this close again." Georgie whispered to the pup as she went to sit in her chair, "I'm guessing there is no way I'm getting out of this huh?" Georgie asked as she gently placed the backpack on her lap holding it as tight as she could without hurting the dog.

"Nope not tonight G. Anyways any updates on how the play your working on is going." Georgie mother ask Georgie sighs, " Yeah we're all doing well on it, and I feel pretty confident that we'll do well." Georgie told her mother as she felt her backpack move slightly. "Stay" she hissed out to the dog trying to do it quietly.

"What was that?" Georgie's father asks Georgie making her groan internally, "Oh I said it was a beautiful day." Georgie told her parents still holding the bag firmly in her lap trying to keep Pumpkin from squirming.

Her mom noticed again though, and said, "Georgie I think your phone is ringing." Georgie sighs in relief at that excuse  being mentioned so she didn't have to make up another one. "Yeah I should probably take this. Goodnight mother, goodnight father." Georgie told her parents walking quickly up the stairs and into her room.

Georgie sits on her bed taking the puppy  out of the bag. "I'm going to have to tell them. That's the second time today that's happened, and next time I'm sure they'll figure it out. Maybe there'll be less consequences this time if I tell them the trutb" Georgie told Pumpkin stroking her ear.

Pumpkin cocks her head in confusion before sighing sighs as if saying "I understand, but I don't like it." Georgie sighs somewhat understanding the pup. " I know girl, but look on the bright side. If they kick us out we have somewhere to go." Georgie told the pup who nods, as she grabs the hedgehog toy and starts to chew on it.

Georgie laughs slightly, "You know I got you real dog toys for a reason. Why are you still chewing on Flora?" Georgie asked playfully as she really thought the puppy would want dog toys not a kids toy that Georgie got to keep after it was used as a prop for a play."

The puppy just barked cocking it's head, " It smells like you that's why I like it." Pumpkin barked out before jumping on the bed toy still in her mouth and lying down at Georgie's feet.

Georgie smiled, "Your right we should deal with this in the morning goodnight Diva Dog." Georgie told the puppy turning off the bedside lamp. Tommorow would be stressful no matter which way things went. But one thing was for sure Georgie was keeping Pumpkin.
