Those eyes, those deep brown eyes, they told me of a terrible pain.

But, even so, I remained a foolish man.

What happened?

The girl stood before the line that separated the concrete and the flower bed.

Her face was covered with an undeterminable expression.

A million things ran through my head, but only one word came from my mouth.

"M-María?"

Her expression didn't change.

Taking a hesitant step forward I asked, "what's wrong?"

Even with no response, I decided to get closer.

"María," I continued, "did something happen when I was gone?"

The look on her face switched in a matter of seconds.

"So you were actually here earlier?"

"Uh, yes?"

Her eyes met mine with a glint of agony. I could see the tears building up.

"What... happened?" I said as I drew closer to the girl, my feet taking gentle steps.

She was in arms reach, she was right there... but when I tried to hold her close to my chest, her hands pressed against my torso, pushing me away.

"N-no!"

Tears began to spill from her eyes, soaking her delicate cheeks. I extended my hand to wipe the droplets from her skin, but she swatted it away.

"Stop," she cried out, putting emphasis in her words, " yo-you can't just try to hug me, and wipe my tears away, to make the pain disappear!"
