HOPE OR DESPAIR

Xiao Zhan P.O.V

I stayed at the doctor's dormitory at the hospital for the night. When I wake up it's 3:45 am. I checked the time in my phone and was confused. I got here at around 2:15 last night. And the moment my head hits the bed I fell asleep. Instantly. Being a surgeon you should learn to sleep whenever you get the chance. But right now sleep feels so alien.

I sit up and look at my surroundings. There's another doctor right next to my room. Probably a junior surgeon. I try not to make much sound and get ready. Now that I'm up I should at least go check on the ICU real quick.

I didn't know if Yu Bin ge stayed in the hospital too. Normally he doesn't stay when he knows I'm staying. But I don't remember if I told him I'll be staying at the hospital.

When I first started working here, I undoubtedly had a crush on him. He was my direct senior and while working with him my feelings turned something around liking. In a sudden whim of work and stress we both went to the bar and after a wild drunk sex I realized he isn't someone I wanted. And my feelings naturally faded.

Recently I found him avoiding me a little bit. He doesn't have lunch with me and Lu jie anymore. Even Cao Yuchen ge sometimes have lunch with us. But Yu Bin ge stopped. I don't wanna think about it anyway.

When I reached the ICU ward I found two of the nurses rushing away. I found it strange. But didn't give it much thought at that time. But as I neared the cabin of my patient I found a horrific scene. A scary looking man towering over a patient threatening him about something in scary whisper. Right when that man was going to hold the patient's collar I used my limited martial art I learned to dismantle him away from the sick patient and pull the patient behind me.

With a thud the scary thug hit the wall of the ICU ward and then the ground.

"Don't dare threaten a patient inside the hospital."

At first I could feel the killer aura he was exuding and standing up in a swift move he raised his hand to hit me with a punch. I was ready to defend but the hit never came.

When I looked at that man he was directly looking at my face. A weird smile later he just left the place. I didn't really give it any importance but when I went to check that patient he was threatening I was stunned to see his panicked expression.

"Why'd you do that?"

"Why wouldn't I?" I glared at the patient. "Who are you? Why are you in the middle of the ICU ward?"

"My son is in here!" He lowered his head. He has a few scratches and stitches and one of his hands is casted. So he asked the nurses to help him watch his son from afar I guess. My expression softens a bit.

"Which room is your son in?"

He uses his unharmed hand and points to the room my patient is in. Wait he's Zhu Wei's father? The one who faced the accident together with him? Oh my god!

"What's your name?"

"Zhu Zanjin, sir."

"Ok." I look at him. Even I don't know what I was trying to figure out. I looked at him for a few seconds then I decided. "Follow me."

He looked surprised but didn't say anything, just following me silently. After entering the ICU room of Zhu Wei I told him to stand at a bit distance so as not to hinder me checking on my patient. After I checked his vital and swelling I let Zhu Zanjin go near his son while standing myself at the door. This is the first time ever that I used my status as the director's son. And it was totally worth it. Mr. Zhu Zanjin looked like he was really close with his son. A question came to my mind. Where is the child's mother? But I instantly let my curiosity go. I'm not the type to pry into people's private matters. I heard the distressed father softly whispering to his son.

"Baobei. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have taken you with me. I should have let you stay with your grandma. Please wake up soon." There was sound of sniffing. Even though his words were really soft and low I could hear everything. "Flower! When you wake up papa will definitely buy you that ice-cream. I promise."

At around one in the afternoon I told Lu jie I'll have lunch out. A-Chang was going to meet me today for lunch. We met at a small restaurant right opposite the hospital and ordered two bowls of spicy noodles both me and A-Chang's favourite.

When we both were returning to the hospital I felt like someone was watching me. I looked around a general direction but found nothing. Strange!

Both of us brothers entered dad's room only to find Madam Xiao sitting there. When we entered she looked at us and her expression changed to a relaxed and calm one. Is something wrong?

"Mom" A-Chang gave out a happy call to his mom. I smile a little too. After all we're civil. But the reason of Madam Xiao coming to the hospital was unclear to me.

"Zhan. Someone will come today to talk to you about your laboratory. Do you have any appointments later?" My father asked me in a relaxed voice.

"I only have round today at 4 and then at 7."

"That's great let's go have dinner out together. Four of us. As a family." Madam Xiao said, making me frown. As a family? "Ah. It's okay. It's just a small dinner. Don't think too much."

"Gege please come with us. Today is mom's birthday." A-Chang gave me the most convincing puppy eyes he could master. "Please, ge?"

"Ok. I'll go. Is 8 o' clock okay?"

"Perfect." My very enthusiastic didi said with a glow in his eyes.

Later when I was talking to Me. Zhu Zanjin about his son's recovery in my cabin my guests finally arrived. I didn't know it was going to be Wang Yibo. He's going to build the laboratory? When I saw him enter my cabin I felt a pang in my heart. I don't know the reason. The last two and half years he always avoided me. Why is he here now? And why are his eyes so cold. After him entered another man, Yibo's elder brother. I signal for them to wait with my hand as I was just finishing up with Mr. Zanjin.

"Please save my son at all cost, Dr. Xiao." The voice of a pleasing father reached my heart and I knew I was going to do everything to save Zhu Wei. Then he turned around to leave my room.

But...

"Zanjin!"

"Haikuan!"
