Moving back in with his uncle had been a hard decision. He barely made it out the first time, using his sister's disappearance as a cover. He had used the houseboat as an excuse not to live under the same roof as him. Now that his house boat was fixed up, and he was ready to leave again. He didn't know how to breach the subject with his uncle.

Scrooge hadn't treated him the same as before he left. For this he was thankful, but he had an inclination that was mostly for the kids' benefit or to lull him into a false sense of security. Donald knew he couldn't stay away from him forever. He would have to go to him eventually, like tonight.

...

Gladstone walked up to the manor. He had been struck luckless. No one had offered to take him home, and he hadn't won any luxurious hotel suites, and he was dumbfounded. He managed to get a free taxi to his uncle's place, but that was all.

He wondered in late. The kids would be in bed and so would his fuddy duddy cousin. Not his uncle though. Making his way to the spare bedrooms, he had a thought - well more of a memory - of the last he had stayed and woke up with the old birds cane to his neck because Scrooge though he was an intruder. He probably should let him know he was crashing here so there wasn't a repeat of the incident.

He made his way to Scrooge's room but paused when he saw the door was already cracked open. It was almost always shut. He creep closer and saw Donald standing in front of their uncle, who looked more smug than normal. The scene was very odd.

"I just wanted to tell you the house boats fixed up." The smugness faded from Scrooge at Donald news.

"Oh, so I suppose you're here to say your goodbyes?" There was a sharp undertone that Gladstone didn't like.

"I didn't want to make a scene in front of boys," Donald nodded.

"Scene?" Gladstone whispered to himself confused.

"The boys?" Something wild entered Scrooge's eyes. Gladstone had seen it before, but never couldn't pin it down. Donald knew what it was and took a step back. "You're not planning on taking them, are ya?"

"I would hate to burden you," Donald didn't finish, but something was implied, something only they knew. Scrooge walked to the bay window and stared out.

"Donald, lad, I've stayed away. I've given ya your space, ten years of it and this is how you repay me." Donald took another step away and so did Gladstone. Their uncle was scaring him.

"Uncle Scrooge, please, it doesn't," he was cut off.

"It doesn't what?" Scrooge snapped. He flung open the window. "I've told you before that it's no burden, Donald."

"I didn't mean to insult you," Donald scrambled backwards. Gladstone couldn't see him any more but heard him hit the wall with a soft thud.

"Of course not." Scrooge turned towards the duck and crossed the floor to him. "Though, I think ya might want to reconsider leaving."

"I really have to Uncle Scrooge. It's for the best," Donald said, not visible to Gladstone. Though the goose could hear the trimble in his voice.

"It's been ten years, Donald. I thought you were starting to forgive me. I really have changed, love." Scrooge was standing to close to Donald for Gladstone liking.
