(A/N: if the writing in this chapter is bad, or rimuru seems a little out of character that's because I am writing and editing this at 2.am where I'm at right now so my brain is mush... I need to sleep now good night)

(Rimuru POV)

My footsteps echoed through the thin staircase as I made my way forward.

I stopped when I took note of the faint light in front of me. It was dim. Very dim. But light nonetheless...

an exit? I ask myself.

Finally, I thought. This staircase was unnecessarily long. I complain.

I had defaulted to my human form for the simple reason that it was easier to climb stairs in.  There weren't any humans around at least none that were in my range of sight.  so it should be fine if I was stark naked...  eh, whatever that was a side note.  My exhibitionist ways weren't important.  NOT AT ALL.

I began walking forward once more, and it didn't take me long to reach the exit and finally leave behind the staircase.  changing back into my slime form as I reached the top.

I used magic sense to gaze out at the new scenery.

Strewn out in front of me were plains... kinda. The grass was an ominous dark purple and the sky gleamed as a strange light which was placed within the sky created a sort of night-time ambiance.  strange as it was.

I was definitely still underground. Just a little bit past the light source was a roof made of stone that almost resembled the moon. That was proof enough.

So this place can artificially create light. And it doesn't seem man-made either it's far too big. I thought.

Black twisting trees extending from the ground to the ceiling that seemed to branch out and hold the moon-like object in place where lodged into the walls.

The walls beside me, now colored the same ominous purple hue, stretched on either side of me indefinitely. It was much larger than the room I was reborn in.

The staircase actually continued a little bit. In between, the wall and the platform was an abyss. I couldn't tell how deep it was just by looking at it but, it somehow gave me this weird feeling of emptiness...

How ominous. I think to myself.

I make my way across the staircase and began my trek across the new terrain.

As I hopped across the field I decided to start consuming some plants in hopes that they may be useful later. but, all great sages analysis showed it was little more than dead grass disappointingly enough.

(1 hour later.)

2...no 3.  a sword swiftly slashed diagonally upwards from the ground to the air and approached me at a few times the speed of sound.

I jump back and another sword aimed right at the back of my head pierces through the air at similar speeds to the first.

I flick my head to the left and the sword just grazes past my right cheek.

Some monsters had started showing up.

Some resemble ghosts. No, I guess they were ghosts after all. They were much larger than your average ghost though and much stronger than you'd think. About high A- to low A rank. If I'm being honest I was a little worried as it seemed physical attacks didn't have any effect on them and according to great sage they were attempting to attack my soul which could leave permanent scars, but very luckily for me, they were far too slow to actually land anything.
