Life was like an intangible, fleeting dream.

For the next few weeks, I was vaguely aware of what was happening. I could see through my eyes, but I was somewhere else. I wasn't even existing -- it was as though I was a captive in my own body...not being able to talk or move.

I was only able to see, and even then I couldn't retain the information.

I couldn't remember as the days continued to pass.

They would all bleed into another. I didn't know how many days passed by. I didn't know if a month would pass.

I finally woke up after a bit, a coherent, willful thought erupted through my mind. It seemed as though I had kept all my thoughts bottled up that they had exploded once I was fully conscious.

My head was propped up by something warm and rough. It was turned to the side, I recognized that I was laying down in a car, the back of the driver's seat was in front of me. Evan's hand was placed on top of my head, slowly stoking it.

Like a prized possession.

I did my best to not move.

My body was stiff and sore. I wished that I had remembered the past couple of weeks, but the last thing I was fully aware of was screaming in the hallway of school after he...

He...

I had a feeling that he held true to his promise – that he put me on those drugs. There was no telling how much time had exactly passed.

All I knew was that the clothes that I was currently wearing weren't the ones that I had fallen unconscious in.

This was my life now...wasn't it...?

Tears leaked from the corner of my eyes silently. I kept staring at the back of the driver's seat, determined to not move even an inch. Tears continued to flow while I did my best to not tremble.

I wanted to scream again.

I didn't want this to be my life-

I didn't want to wake up after an unknown number of days-

I didn't want to think about what Evan was doing with my body when...

"She's fine," Evan's voice said from above me. I listened, concentrating on not making a single sound. I even held my breath as to not give myself away. His fingers twirled through my hair. I could feel the soft tugs and pulls.

There was then a small, mocking chuckle coming from him.

"No," he took in a breath. I could feel his stare burning through the back of my head. The urge to move was tantalizing, but I kept it in. "She doesn't know up from down. The drugs are working great, mother."

I listened intently for the voice that responded back – but it wasn't Mrs. Hale on the other end of the phone. It sounded like a woman I didn't recognize, it had a lighter, more airy tone...I had never heard it before.

I didn't know what was going on – I wasn't still on the drugs, was I?

No...

I was awake.

"I'll come back to the compound when I have officially broken Natalie in. I don't want her traveling right now," his voice had grown lighter. There he was again, faking compassion that I knew he would never be capable of authenticating. "She's had enough drugs injected in her that I don't want to test any side effects."

I frowned.

Who was he talking to?

Compound?
