"If someone hands you a crying baby, do you, a, curse it? B, Lock it in a tower? C, Give it a bottle? Or d, carve out its heart?" Fairy Godmother asks the next morning in Goodness class.

Jay and Carlos are just sitting there. Evie is sitting straight up with her attention to Godmother. Mal is drawing, and I have my feet on the desk while I'm messing with a bobby pin.

Evie gasps and raises her hand. "Evie," Fairy Godmother points to her and smiles.

"What was the second one?" Evie asks.

I smile and shake my head.

"Oh, okay. Anyone else? Mal?"

Mal looks up. "C, give it a bottle."

"Correct," Godmother says, smiling. "Again."

"You are on fire, girl," Carlos says. "How do you do that?"

"Chose the one that isn't any fun," I say, stabbing myself with the bobby pin accidentally.

Mal nods and points to me with the eraser of her pencil as the others nod and make 'oooh' noises.

There's a squeal from right next to me. I look over boredly as the girl runs when she passes us.

"Hello, dear one," Godmother says to the girl.

"Hi," the girl says. She hands Godmother a clipboard and looks at us nervously. "You need to sign off an early dismissal for the coronation."

Mal elbows both Evie and I. We both look over at her as she subtlety nods to the girl.

"Everyone here remembers my daughter, Jane?" Godmother asks, signing the papers.

"Mom, no!" Jane whispers.

"It's okay," Fairy Godmother says, handing the paper back to Jane before looking at us. "This is everyone."

Jane says a small 'hi' to us before saying, "That's okay, don't mind me, as you were." She starts walking, but squeals and runs past us.

"You're really pretty!" I shout after her, and shrug when Mal elbows me.

Fairy Godmother clears her throat. "Let's continue. You find a vial of poison! Do you, a, put it in the king's wine? B, paint it on an apple?" We all glance at Evie and she smiles. "Or c, turn it over to the proper authorities?"

Everyone but Mal and I raise their hands and gasp. Jay pushes Carlos' hand down.

"Jay."

"C. You turn it over to the proper authorities."

"I was gonna say that!" Carlos says, hitting Jay's shoulder.

"But I said it first!" Jay says, rubbing it in Carlos' face. "Come here!" Jay wraps his arm around Carlos' head and starts messing up his hair. "Come on, who said it first?" he asks, getting up onto the desk with Carlos as they start fighting. "Who said it first?"
