{ Daenerys }

✧✦✧

𝕿ruth had been something that Daenerys had valued for as long as she had known. She liked others to trust in her, to believe in her, and to let her know when things were not as they seemed. It was why she had asked Coren Thorne to always tell her the truth, knowing that (whilst the man had an ability to lie), he never bothered to hide anything from her.

He made his opinion known.

However, occasionally, Daenerys did not want someone to tell her that the idea was terrible. Sometimes, she just wanted someone to tell her that everything was going to work out. So, just as before, she would go to Coren.

The older boy was someone she had found comfort in, throughout everything.

"He was misogynistic! It is a good thing that we are not allied with him, for he would be useless." Daenerys smiled as Coren came to the concluding point of his long rant on the Spice King, which could all be summarised into three words - Coren hated him.

That had reassured the young queen that her outburst was all the more necessary, and to have Coren's full support behind her was also nice though Daenerys didn't know why.

"So, I was right?"

"More than right. If you didn't, I would have ended up killing him in his sleep." Coren smiled at her gently. "I do not understand why you second guess yourself, Khaleesi. Your ideas and thoughts have always been good ones, and not siding with the Spice King will work out in our favour."

"I do not think you are right though. He is rich, and powerful."

"But he is not you. He's not the rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, he doesn't have four dragons nor such handsome guards as you do." Coren grinned at that, as Daenerys let out a truly un-queen like snort of laughter, covering her face with her hands. "Do you disagree? I am clearly the best looking guard out of everybody here."

"Coren, stop it." Daenerys smacked the man's arm playfully as Coren also began to laugh, sitting beside her on the balcony, overlooking their small courtyard. The city was quiet in the late hours of the night, the stars their only witness as Daenerys watched the man from the corner of her eyes. He finally stopped chuckling, sighing as he grew serious once more.

"Khaleesi, I truly mean it. We do not need the Spice King." His eyes met her and Daenerys did not think that she had ever seen a more truly mesmerising pair of brown eyes. "You are strong and powerful, more than you seem to believe you are. We will get through this."

"You seem to have a lot of faith in someone who has not even done anything yet." Daenerys turned back to the stars. "I do not want your faith to be misplaced."

"It is my faith to place." Coren replied. "I've placed it with you, and that is were it will stay. There is no reason for me to lose it."

"You are too good a guard for me."

"I like to think that I'm good at my job." Coren broke the serious mood, causing Daenerys to chuckle again. It was nice, being around someone her own age who would not lie to her. Daenerys supposed, in some twisted way, that it was nice to finally have someone that she could trust.

She had never had that before.

When Xaro had arrived at her chambers the next morning, asking her to walk with him, Daenerys had been unsurprised to find that Coren did not want to go with them. He had ground his teeth, glared at the man vehemently, before finally walking along behind them with Kovarro, albeit reluctantly.

Luckily for all of them, Xaro had not noticed Coren's anger, instead asking Daenerys on her thoughts of the meeting with the Spice King. They had talked, going back and forth over what had happened and the other things that had happened since.

Daenerys was more than happy to spill her displeasure at the entire situation.

"The Spice King refuses me because I'm a bad investment. The Silk King won't support me because of his business with the Lannisters. Why offend his best customer?" Both of these things, Daenerys could begrudgingly agree with. "And the Copper King offers me a single ship on the condition that I lie with him for a night. Does he think I will whore myself out for a boat?"

Daenerys would not be doing anything of the sort. She'd set her dragons on him.

"When I came to this city, I had nothing. Truly nothing." Xaro was unnervingly calm. "I slept by the docks. And when I could find work loading the ships, I would eat. If not, I dreamed of food. Today, I am the richest man in Qarth. Do you think the path from poverty to wealth is always pure and honourable? I have done many things, Khaleesi, that a righteous man would condemn. And here I am, with no regrets."

Daenerys wanted to scream at him, tell him that their situations were different. She was a girl, a child in most people's eyes as she had only just reached adulthood. Already they would not take her seriously in negotiations, merely because of her age, but her gender as well would cast her to the side. She would not bargain with men on their terms, not when she knew what the choice would be.

She did not know Xaro's life, or his struggles, but they were not the same person. Daenerys would not make the same choices as Xaro did and she would not step on anyone's neck to do that. She would not hurt others to push herself up, unless they deserved it.

Xaro opened the door to Daenerys' chambers, revealing a courtyard of bodies, blood spilling across the pale tiles.

It took a mere moment for Daenerys to process the scene, before she was rushing for the stairs.

"Bar the gates. Ring the bells." Xaro's voice grew quieter as Daenerys ran for her room. "Slowly, Khaleesi!"

Footsteps followed, but it was a different voice that called again.

"Khaleesi!" Coren was on her heels as she wove through the halls to her room, throwing open the door. Irri's lifeless eyes stared back at her, as Daenerys' knees threatened to give out. She hoped and prayed, twisting and turning, looking for her dragons, but she could not see them.

"Where are they?" Daenerys didn't even recognise her own voice, clutching at her heart as she turned. "Where are my dragons?"

"Khaleesi!" Coren appeared in the doorway, taking in the sight with wide eyes.

"They took them." Daenerys wasn't sure if Coren even heard her sentence. "They took my dragons!"

It came out as a scream, anguish clear in her voice and eyes.

At that point, her knees gave out and she went crashing into Coren, clutching onto his armour so tight, she feared she'd leave dents in the metal.

"My dragons." Daenerys cried, clinging to him. "They took them...they took them! They took my dragons."

Coren merely held her in response.

Hiya,

So, Dany needs to do some thinking of her emotions with Coren but I really love them and the dragons are gone!! Sorry it took so long for the chapter to come out, but don't worry, I've been writing a lot of later chapters for this book so there's a lot of fun to come :)

Let me know what you think,

Love Li xx
