Liza P.O.V.

"Are you sure you're okay to go to school, darling?"

"I'm fine." I answered so softly, it was almost a whisper.

"You've been extremely pale since yesterday. Did something happen?" my mom continued, her eyes trained onto the road, though she still managed to shoot worried glances at me.

"Nothing happened."

She sighed. "Alright, then. But call me if you need to come home."

"I will."

Resting my head on the cold window of the car, I stared at the blurring trees around me. The morning sun had disappeared, and now only a few rays shone onto the ground. Clouds brewed in the darkening sky, and I suddenly wished I had remembered my rain jacket.

"Your dad will come pick you up straight after school, Liza, so don't keep him waiting." my mom said after a few minutes of silence. "I'll make sure he doesn't forget you again."

My smile was dry. "Thanks, mom."

"Of course, if he does happen to forget, just get a ride with one of your friends. What was that one called that took care of you that one time? The principal's son, wasn't it? What was his name... Brad? No, Brandon. No, Bre-"

"Don't."

My voice was icy cold, and lashed out like a whip in the peaceful car. I turned my head for a second to see my mom's shocked expression, and then I turned back to the window. My face was expressionless as I continued my staring.

The rest of the drive was completely silent. We arrived in the school parking lot a few minutes later, and my mom said nothing as I got out of the car. I shut the door quickly, and started to walk towards the school. I looked back once more, and was able to catch a glimpse of my mom's worried face staring after me before she drove off.

I was struck instantly with a pang of guilt. She didn't deserve to be treated like that. Just because I was filled with pain, didn't mean she had to share it.

"I'm sorry." I whispered, watching her go.

"Liza!" someone called from across the parking lot, and I turned slowly to face them.

"Oh, hey Hailey." I said as she neared, waiting for her to catch up.

"I didn't know if you were coming today, you about the whole-" she stopped herself abruptly. She cleared her throat, "But I'm so glad you did!"

I allowed myself a small smile. "Thanks."
