Cassandra dreaded going to school as she was walking out to grab her bike from the shed of her foster home.

She kicked up the stand and began to cycle to school. She thought of accidentally falling and not being able to go to school because of the minor injury. But she knew her foster parents would just tell her to suck it up and go to school.

She cycled into the carpark seeing all of the other students getting out of their parents car or their own. She felt the feeling of loneliness in her stomach again as she locked her bike and fixed her windblown hair before turning to her school.

She ignored the looks of pity she was getting from random strangers or the whispering of her name as she made her way to her locker.

A picture of her parents came to greet her as she opened her locker. She felt an urge to take it down and ju as t leave it on the floor but she knew she had to except her parents death.

Flashback

"Cassandra get in the car before I leave without you." Her mother called her. "I'm coming." Cassandra said from the stairs. "K let's go." Her mother said not bothering to look at her. "Bye dad." She yelled hoping to get a response. Silence. But was it a surprise. No.

Cassandra and her mother sat in the car in silence . Her mother staring at the road and Cassandra staring at the window. "I have a test today." Cassandra mumbled. "Did you study?" Her mother asked. "Yes of course I did mom." She sighed. "Good. Do well. You need straight A's this summer." Her mother answered. "You didn't even ask what the test was about." Cassandra mumbled to herself. Her mother thankfully didn't hear her.

"Thanks mom. Love you." Cassandra hoped to get an I love you back . "Bye." Her mother said with zero emotion before driving away.

End of flashback

It was rare for Cassie's parents to show her any sign of affection. Maybe on birthdays she might get a hug and a kiss on the cheek but getting anything more hadn't happened since she was young.

Her father definitely loved Cassie more. He used to sit up on the roof with her and help her learn each of the constellations. That had stopped after a few years but Cassie still remembered every single thing he would tell her.

She looked to her left when she heard 3 voices. "Care I'm right here." A girl Cassandra knew as Elena Gilbert.  She looked at them as they talked until another girl named bonnie Bennet noticed her and stared back at her. Cassandra put her head down feeling embarrassed.

"Hey." Bonnie's voice said to Cassandra seconds later. "Hey." Cassandra replied confused on why she was talking to her when she had friends a few metres away.

"I'm Bonnie. Your Cassandra right?" Bonnie said giving the girl a bright smile. "Yeah that's me." Cassandra replied giving back the best smile she could. "I was in most of your classes last year. I'm not a stalker or anything." Bonnie added quickly making Cassandra let out a small laugh.

Bonnie's face lit up when she saw she made the girl laugh. "I'm pretty sure my name has been going around the school anyways." Cassandra shrugged with a  smile. "I've heard a few mentions." Bonnie admitted.

"Do you wanna sit with me and my friends?" Bonnie offered changing the subject."um, sure I guess." Cassie replied to the nice offer.

She wasn't sure if Bonnie actually wanted to sit with her or she pitied her like many others. But she just nodded to be polite.

"Super. I'll see you at lunch." Bonnie smiled again. "See you." Cassie waved and watched as bonnie walked back to her friends again.

Cassie faced her locker again but not before noticing the popular group of jocks standing nearby .

Tyler Lockwood had an arm tightly wrapped around Vicki Donovan. A person Cassie wasn't exactly a huge fan of.

Tyler hadn't spoken to her in a long time. He hadn't even said a word to her at her parents funeral. But for some reason he was now staring straight at her  from across the hall.

She noticed the staring quick enough and glanced over at him. He didn't look away when she caught him. Instead, he gave her a small nod and a barely noticeable smile.

Cassie knew it was a pity smile. Why else would Tyler even look in her direction? She didn't return the smile. She just turned back to her locker and closed it before walking to class.

"Hey . Where did you go?" Elena asked bonnie once she caught up to her. "I invited someone to have lunch with us." Bonnie told her proudly. "Who?" Elena asked curiously. "Cassandra Elffire." Bonnie said with a smile. "Isn't that the one who hasn't got any friends." Elena asked again. "No. She has us now." Bonnie smiled. "Well anyway I met this guy by the bathrooms." Elena gushed.

Bonnie waved at Cassie as she walked into history . Cassie gave her a bright smile back sitting across from her in her assigned seat. "Hey stranger." Cassie said. "Hey. You still eating lunch with me and my friends?" Bonnie asked. "I'll think about it. Might be too busy." Cassie replied joking.

Elena Gilbert felt jealousy boiling up in her stomach at the girl who was getting close too fast to her bestfriend. She watched the two girls until class started and the teacher walked in.

Stefan Salvatore on the other  hand had been watching Cassie. But not for the same reason .

After all of Cassie's years being in Mr Tanner's class she had never seen him speechless. "His face though." Bonnie and Cassie giggled walking out of the history classroom.

"Salvatore , right?" She hadn't heard a first name from the teacher. "Uh, it's Stefan." He said looking back at her. "Well done in class. No one's ever seen Mr Tanner that annoyed." She said smiling at him.

"Thanks. You are?" He asked still not knowing who he was speaking to. "Cassie." She said, she didn't really use her full name that often. Even teacher's began calling her Cassie after a while.

"Nice to meet you Cassie." He said before walking off to get to his next class.

"Your friend Elena was staring at me before class started . Did I do something to her?" Cassie asked Bonnie. "I'm sure she was just curious about you. You never really talked much before now." Bonnie told her. "Yeah,I was kinda a loner." She agreed letting out a laugh. "I wish I did talk to you before though." Bonnie said . "Same ." Cassie agreed.

Life seemed to finally be nice to Cassie. She felt more confident. She smiled. She laughed. She even said more than one word to the new kid.

She had a friend.
