Upbringing - Brought up in a relatively good home, strict but caring motivations, "we do it because we love you" type deal.

Childhood - Normal grubby handed kid, his dad was drafted as a medic in World War One, left when Rudy was four in 1914 and returned in 1918. During this time Rudy missed his father very so much and was elated when he returned. As a child he wanted to be just like dad, and spent his days fantasizing and obliviously romanticizing the war. 

Past/present home life - Good home, his father was a doctor, mother was a housewife. He had a younger sister who was born shortly after his dad left.
