jehan taking a bus or something from paris to england, with a single bag with a change of clothes, a water bottle and like five dollars in change. he shows up to his friend's house exhausted and hungry

he lives like a bear in hibernation for a week, he wakes up to eat something, uses the bathroom and goes to sleep. he's plagued with nightmares and guilt and his friend gets worried he's gonna get sick again

but he doesnt

jehan waking up one day and everything just feels kind of clear. he can breathe properly, he's actually hungry, he has some of his pep back

he has to deal with religious guilt and trauma now baybee

it gets better each day but he has all of the underlying mannerisms and mindsets that lend themselves as a result of his religious upbringing, like his friend is like "what the fuck are you doing getting up at 5am on a sunday morning" and jehans like "???? church???"

he's chronically indecisive to this day, at first he got really stressed making decisions because "what if its the wrong one, what if its bad, what if i get in trouble for it, what if they get mad at me because of it"

he feels hollow and alone a lot, for a while he didn't understand the world around him, like life didn't have meaning, he would get panic attacks that florika was burning in hell

for a really long time he hates anyone who's religious at all, it takes years before he understands that truly not everyone is like that

it takes decades, but he outgrows those mindsets and habits, he finds peace with his past and overcomes it.

it comes back to whisper in his ear when he gets the call that his brother is dead, and that theres a kid who he needs to come see. he finally kind of feels what frollo might have felt, not that he doesnt want to see quasimodo, he's elated, but he finally understands the guilt and fear frollo would have felt.

he actually stays in paris for a little while while things get sorted out. he befriends clopin and phoebus, they actually have a lot in common

theres a "so you're frollo's younger brother. you don't look anything like him."

defo defo a scene somewhere where phoebus comes over to jehan one night disheveled to hell and just asks with the last grains of composure "how did you deal with florika dying?" and then breaks down sobbing and jehan just holds him close and smooths his hair down and lets him cry, feeling horrible, because god why does history keep repeating itself.

and after phoebus has calmed down he gets him a glass of water and looks at him for a second and "i went and i tried to overdose so you're already doing better than me" and everything is so dark and awful and they cant help but laugh and then "i don't know...i don't know what to tell you. but im still here. and it hurt. and sometimes it still hurts. but im here. and so are you. and you'll be here tomorrow, and the day after. at least i hope you will be." and just talks to him very calmly and phoebus vents about everything he misses and jehan just listens and oh my god i love them

he goes over to clopin's apartment and finds him also in tears on the floor, his place a mess and sobbing brings him to bed and coaxes him to sleep because he doesnt look like he's rested in days and jehan cleans up the apartment, goes out and buys fresh flowers, sweeps and mops the place, opens a window, he's not trying to usher clopin to move on, but he doesnt want him wallowing in filth either, he encourages him to take as much time as he needs, makes him some food, clopin's so much worse off because esmerelda was like family to him but jehan checks in on him regularly and he ends up ok

quasi's the worst. he sits in his room all day and says nothing, he doesnt eat, doesnt  sleep, it's worrying, he's like a statue. he doesn't talk for a really long time, he goes non verbal for a while because what happened was too traumatic for him to process.

it jeopardizes things a little because jehan needs to go back home soon but he refuses to just leave quasimodo before things get better, but he doesnt know when theyre going to get better, so he stays for a few more months to wait it out a little more and they do turn more positive. quasi still doesnt verbally speak but he starts falling into a new routine and communicating a little more. he sees clopin and phoebus and they talk for a while, though its weird being back together again without esmerelda.

jehan fights for quasimodo and eventually they move back to england together. he lives a ways out of the city, it a quieter neighbourhood, with a yard and a quiet dog. quasimodo starts speaking again, he goes to like hella counselling and stuff

he talks a lot with jehan about he feels confused and disoriented and the same stuff jehan felt after getting away from religion and jehan explains that to him, how it gets better, clearer.

jehan coming dangerously close to relapsing because the guilt of it all comes crashing down on him, and he doesn't know how to cope, he blames himself for the way quasimodo is, for his brothers death and esmereldas death, and he gets scared to tell anyone because hes supposed to be helping others, not him asking for it.

he goes to coffee with clopin one day and clopins doing better and alright kind of just takes his hand and asks "hey are you ok? you seem droopy. " and jehans real quiet for a long time and he kind of just whispers "it's all my fault" and it all comes rushing out of him

everyones hurtin yknow

time heals

phoebus stays in paris, he visits esmerelda's grave as much as he can to bring her fresh flowers, he stays captain of the police, and promises to do his job as well as possible so something like this never happens again. he stays close to clopin's bar and his friends, he has a support system, he'll be ok

not necessarily as a result, but for some reason after the events, clopin becomes really fickle, he hates staying in one place for too long or getting too close to people, he gives the bar to some friends who have promised to take good care of it. he uses the money to buy a van and spends a summer aggressively renovating it and then leaves to travel across europe and wherever he can go. he visits quasi in england and says hello to jehan and his boyfriend, he's okay too, he tells himself esmerelda never really left, she travels with him in spirit and says hello to him in his dreams. he has a couple keepsakes he keeps in his van.

getting away from everything was best for quasi, going back is still kind of triggering, he doesnt really like to talk about religion. he finally gets proper medical care and hearing aids and glasses and everything, like they enroll him in the right education system and he kind of gets a new chance at life and he's as good as he can be after all that
