When you grow up in an orphanage full of girls, you learn that it is every woman for themselves. You have to do things on your own, figure it out on your own, and learn things on your own. It was a cruel environment that had taught Adelaide Greenwood she was alone.

She had made peace with being alone, at least she thought she made peace with it. She didn't know anything else.

It was suffocating.

Even when she got out of the orphanage and was adopted by the Greenwoods' she was on her own. Of course, she had Sebastion, but he wasn't always there. He went off to school for two whole years before they could be together again. So in that time, she had been alone to defend herself against her parents and other people who had come around their house.

Her parents had always been holding meetings and events that, when necessary, she had to attend. It was her mother's birthday party where she first met Draco Malfoy.

It wasn't as bad as you would think either. The two didn't really dislike each other until Hogwarts came around and Adelaide was sorted into Hufflepuff, that Draco and Addy had grown a distaste for each other.

In fact, if you ask Narcissa and Melinda, the two had been fairly close. The only friend that Adelaide had while her brother was at Hogwarts was Draco. He hadn't always been nice and he was very territorial.

But, it was never something that Adelaide couldn't handle. He had reminded her of the orphanage and she didn't mind the snarky comments or his unwillingness to share toys.

Narcissa had always been Adelaide's favorite out of Melinda's friends. They had always gotten along and Narcissa had never made a remark about her mysterious blood status.

In fact, Narcissa had always defended Adelaide when possible. Saying that a child with such clear and powerful magic at her age could only be of pure-blood. Which did suffice enough for most of the adults.

Looking at it now, Adelaide supposed it was suspicious how much Narcissa liked her. Whenever Pansy Parkinson or Daphne Greengrass had been around, the woman had never treated them as family like she had with Adelaide.

But that's a thought for another time.

The Greenwoods had always been a family that no one knew much about. Edward had a job as a head in the Ministry, Melinda was a housewife and always threw the grandest of balls. They had a son Sebastion and adopted a younger daughter from a muggle orphanage. That is all people knew of them really, but everyone pretended to know more.
