THE MALL RATS
[ ᴘᴀʀᴛ ᴏɴᴇ ]

"You wear the hat and serve ice cream then!" Steve spoke, placing his hat on his sister's head.

"I'd still do a better job than you." she said, placing the hat on her head and looking through the window to see if there were any customers, after realising that some group of girls in her grade were there she slammed the windows. "Actually, it's fine, Robin you go."

Robin laughed to herself and went out to serve them, Steve still boring around in the back room.

It only took 5 minutes for Steve to jump, he had seemed to have heard something. "Dustin!"

"What?" Y/n questioned.

"Dustin's here."

"Er, so?" Y/n questioned.

"So? Are you joking?" Steve jumped up and ran to the door, bursting into the front of Scoops.

"Henderson!" The door swinged shut, Y/n found it so surreal that her older brother and one of her closest friends were friends, but she laughed it off as she went out after her brother.

"Are all you're friends closer with your brother than you?" asked Robin.

"Not her boyfriend though." Dustin commented, sticking his tongue out at Y/n who just rolled her eyes in response.

"Idiot."

Dustin, Steve and Y/n sat around a table in Scoops Ahoy, Dustin eating some Ice cream he had helped himself to, the three of them were speaking about Dustin's 'girlfriend' he supposedly met during his time at summer camp.

"No, no. No way." Steve denied as Dustin described his girlfriend as 'hotter than Pheobe Cates'. "Hotter than Phoebe Cates? No."

"Mm-hmm. Brilliant too." Dustin added. "And she doesn't even care that my real pearls are still coming in. She says kissing is better without teeth."

Steve nodded, he tried hard not to make it seem like he believed Dustin but it was obvious he didn't.

"Thanks for telling us." Y/n smiled, it was clear to the duo she was being sarcastic and Dustin seemed a bit annoyed his best friend didn't seem to believe him.

"No, Y/n. That's great." Steve reassured Dustin hesitantly. "Proud of you, Man. That's ro- That's kinda romantic. That's like... Wow."

"Hm." Dustin agreed. "Do you really just get to eat as much of this as you want?" he asked, moving the conversation to the ice cream.

"Yeah. I mean, sure. It's not really a good idea for me, though." Steve replied. "You know, I gotta keep in shape for the ladies."

"Yeah, and how's that working out for you?" Robin spoke, overhearing what Steve had said, Y/n sniggered and Steve rolled his eyes.

"Ignore her."

"She seems cool." Dustin spoke.

"She's super cool." Y/n told Dustin.

"No, she's not. So, where are the other knuckleheads?" asked Steve, referring to the rest of the party.

"They aren't knuckleheads." Y/n protested.

"You mean, Lucas isn't a knucklehead?" Dustin questioned.

"Shut up, Dustin!" Y/n hissed. "I was talking about everyone, not just Lucas."

"Basically, they ditched me yesterday." Dustin explained.

"I think everyone was just tired." Y/n reassured Dustin.

"Well you were not too tired to go home and make out-"

"Shut up." Y/n spoke quickly. "We went home, idiot." Dustin stuck his tongue out at Y/n once again, his favourite thing to do was to make fun of Y/n and make her annoyed.

"As I was saying, it was my first day back and they ditched me. Can you believe that?" he questioned.

"Whoa. Seriously?" Steve asked in disbelief.

"I swear to God. Mm." Said Dustin as he ate some more of the ice cream in front of him. "They're gonna regret it, though, big time, when they don't get to share in my glory."

"Glory? What glory?" asked Steve, Dustin sat up and Moved in closer to both Y/n and Steve.

"So, last night, we're trying to get in contact with Suzie..."

"Oh. Mm. Mm-hmm?" Steve nodded.

"And, uh..." Y/n noticed Dustin look around ro see if anyone was listening, he then spoke so quietly so neither Steve or Y/n could hear.

"What?" both Y/n and Steve asked quietly.

"Uh..." He then repeated what he said, the only thing Y/n got from it was 'I am' and 'russia'

"Just speak louder." Steve spoke, not thinking it would be anything deep.

"I intercepted a secret Russian communication!" Dustin blurted out, loud enough for the whole shop to hear.

"He didn't mean that loud, honestly." Y/n complained.

"Yeah, okay, that's what I thought you said." said Steve. "What- What does that mean?"

"It means that we could be heroes." Dustin responded. "True American heroes."

"We already are, if you think about it." Y/n commented.

Steve completely ignored her as he was too interested in the idea. "American heroes?"

"Just think, you could have all the ladies you want and more." Dustin spoke, making Steve become even more invested.

"More?" Steve questioned.

"More." Dustin confirmed.

"I like more." Steve nodded. "And what's the catch?"

"No catch, I just need your help." Dustin replied. "Both of you."

"With what?"

Dustin reached into his bag and pulled out a russian-english dictionary. "Translation."

"Oh, well er, Y/n?" Steve turned to his sister hoping she'd have a good understanding of languages.

"Oh, I can speak some spanish, french?" Y/n asked to see if that could be any help, Dustin dropped the dictionary on the table.

A/n: I'm sorry this is barely anything 🤣 but I am becoming a bit more motivated! 3 more days 🤞
