Over the next couple of days you hang around the Haitani's as much as possible. You secretly look through Rindou's stuff to figure out what he likes, hoping to get inspiration for his birthday present.
When you get absolutely nothing you call up Ran, asking him to go shopping with you. Despite initial hesitation he agrees, telling you to buy him sweets for compensation.
He drove to your street where you were already waiting for him, dressed in your usual casual clothes. He parks his bike before you two make your way to the mall by foot, conversing about things like food and the weather.
"How about a new CD?"
Ran isn't very good at giving advice concerning his brothers present. "But I don't know which one he already has. Have you seen his collection?!" Grumbling he follows you as you walk further down one of the shops.
"Do you have to buy him something?"
You stop and turn "Of course. It's his birthday." You continue walking, Ran by your side now. Silence settles between you two and you consider telling Ran of your feelings, hoping to make him understand why getting Rindou a gift is so important to you.
"I like Rin." You blurt out. Ran doesn't say anything.
"So I want to give him something nice."
"Why not just confess as a present?"
You think for a little, the idea could work but there's a lot of different and better options. "But then our anniversary would fall on his birthday and I'd have to spoil him double the amount." Ran chuckles at that "Just bake him cake and give him head, that's enough spoiling for a birthday and anniversary." Your cheeks heat up and you roll your eyes, embarrassed about Ran's words.
"I'm going to confess a few days later." You pause, stopping in your tracks. Ran turns around and looks at you. "Do I have your blessings?" It takes a couple of seconds for him to react, but when he does he breaks out into laughter.
"What, you wanna marry him?" At a loss of words you simply stare as he doubles over from laughter. "No! Well, not yet!" You let Ran laugh until he's done, wiping his tears away. "Don't worry. You can date my brother."

You come home after a day out shopping with Ran, exhausted and completely worn out you step into your room only to fall face first into your bed. You managed to find something, it's small and maybe useless, but you chose it because you think it will make Rindou happy. You also decided to bake a cake to give him, already having asked the house maids if they could buy the ingredients when they go grocery shopping tomorrow.
You fall asleep thinking about Rindou. And for the first time in a while you sleep without any complication, no dreams or anything, just Rindou.
And then you wake up the next day, overflowing with energy and joy. It's Rindou's birthday and you have to make the cake so it will be ready by noon.
The housemainds buy groceries at eight am and you usually wake up and nine, meaning they must already be back with everything you need. So you get ready and run downstairs. Many children are eating and talking, greeting you as you walk past them. You also walk past the head maid who tells you that she left your ingredients on the kitchen counter. You scream a thank you as you enter the kitchen, wasting no time to start baking.
You mix up a very simple vanilla cake batter and leave it in the oven for 40 minutes. Once the cake is done you let it cool off, preparing the frosting in the meantime. This isn't the first time you made cake, you helped the workers here a bunch since you're already old enough. Only reason you're still living in the orphanage is because the foster system didn't work out for you and you were sent back many times. Now you're waiting until you turn 18 to get out. You don't trust yourself living alone before that.
