We both sat in a plastic fold-up chair by a corner of the backyard. I watched as Dorothy and my other cousins played tag and ran through the crowds of adults chatting.

"So.." I folded my hands, shivering. We chose to sit away from the fire.

He nervously giggled, "Do you have any hobbies?"

I thought about it for a moment. I don't think I had any other hobbies besides doing the things Luke liked to do.

"Not really." I shrugged, "I do enjoy traveling and trying new things but, I am trying to go into medicine so it's been hard." I laugh.

His eyes brightened, "That's awesome!"

"Are you from North Carolina?" I asked.

"No, I came from California because of college but I originally was from New York. I came to North Carolina because of a job offer." He sipped on a soda from a nearby cooler. The tip of his nose turning a light pink.

"That's cool!" I smiled before he offered me a soda, I nodded as he tossed it to me, "I never asked, what is your job?" I rubbed my hands together to create a warmth before reaching for it.

"Oh, well." He panicked, "Computer programming, it's super boring." He shrugged it off.

I sipped on my soda, skeptical of his words. 4 million on Instagram with a random computer programming job?

I raised my eyebrow at him as he avoided eye contact.

Me and Karl actually had a lot in common. He always liked animals, especially domestic ones, like cats.

We talked about our dreams and passions. Surprisingly, I didn't talk about acting or college. He made me feel so.. me. The one that had gotten lost after years of pleasing and validation.

The night sky was dark as it started hitting 11pm. The party didn't seem to be over, people were still dancing and drinking.

My head started pounding again, when was the last time I went to a doctor?

"Hey, you okay?" Karl shouted over the loud music.

I looked up to his worried glance, I nodded, "It's nothing."

He got up without saying a word and dragged me inside, "Holy shit it's still loud in here."

I laughed, "Our walls are very thin."

He giggled, "I know."

I raised an eyebrow.

"I've come here like every barbecue now, it doesn't end until the next morning." He said deadpanned.
