IT WAS A bad idea to be running through the woods with little ammo and in the pitch black of the night. Ellie knew this, but she couldn't say no to AJ.

The young brunette boy felt more comfortable surrounded by trees rather than out in the open. And to be completely honest, so did Ellie.

However it was times like this that the Dixon girl hated the leaves and broken branches around them. The walkers were drawn by sound, and nothing was louder than walking in the woods in the middle of the night.

"Where are we going, Ellie?" AJ yelled over his shoulder, ducking bellow a fallen branch.

"Just run!" The Dixon girl turned, slowing down and taking aim. Squeezing the trigger of her mothers handgun, the walker closest to them fell to the ground.

AJ stopped and turned, waiting a second for Ellie, the girl he considered a sister, to catch up to him. "We have to find a place to rest. We're out of food and almost out of ammo."

"I know, Jay." Ellie panted, gazing out around them. "There...I see a road."

AJ nodded and walked forward. A rule they followed every day since the raid was that AJ Whiting was always in Ellie's line of sight. No matter what.

The two kids panted heavily as their feet touched down on the broken gravel of the road. Ellie clicked on her flashlight, pointing it ahead of them to get their baring.

"Elle, look." The Whiting boy pointed over to a sign riddled with bullet holes and rust. "What does that mean?"

Ellie slowed to a stop as AJ jogged to her with a questioning quirk of his brow.

The Dixon girl chuckled softly, placing a hand on the Whiting boys head. "That, my dear little brother, means we have a destination in mind."

AJ turned to his sister with a smile, urging her back into a run. As they passed the sign, Ellie read it over and over as if it would magically disappear.

HITCHHIKERS MAY BE ESCAPING INMATES.

The answer to all their prayers.

MOVING AS QUIETLY as they could, Ellie and AJ rounded the large and imposing prison. They circled the building's outer chain linked fence until they found an opening.

"Psst! Over here." Ellie whispered to her younger brother. Silently, she pointed her flashlight to the orange wire holding together two pieces of the fence.
