CARL FOUND THE Dixon kids shortly after their father went out. He told them Rick wanted to have a talk with everyone, and that he was gathering the group.
So, now that sat and waited as Rick, Maggie, and Glenn made their way towards them.
"When I met with the Governor," The leader started. "He offered me a deal. He said—He said he would leave us alone if I gave him Michonne. And I was gonna do that...to keep us safe."
Carl put his head down, so Ellie put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"But I changed my mind. But now Merle took Michonne to fulfill the deal and Daryl went to stop him and I don't know if it's too late." Rick took a deep breath. "I was wrong not to tell you. And I'm sorry. What I said last year, that first night after the farm...it can't be like that. It can't. What we do, what we're willing to do, who we are, it's not my call. It can't be. I couldn't sacrifice one of us for the greater good because—because we are the greater good. We're the reason we're still here, not me. This is life and death. How you live...how you die—It isn't up to me. I'm not your Governor. We choose to go. We choose to stay. We stick together. We vote. We can stay and we can fight or we can go." And with that, he was gone.
Ellie sat there, as did the rest of them, thinking his words over in their heads again and again.
AJ shivered, as the weather was growing cold. Beth even had a beanie on her head. They had to stay. They just had to.
When Michonne walked back into the yard, the Dixon kids immediately ran to her.
"Michonne!" AJ called her attention. "Where's dad?"
"He went after his brother. Merle let me go." The woman put her hands on their shoulders. "He's alive. He is."
It wasn't until the next day that Daryl wandered back to the prison. And when he did, Ellie knew something was wrong.
"Dad? Dad, what's wrong?" She ran to him quickly, seeing his red and puffy eyes. "Dad, what happened? Please, where's Merle?"
Daryl cough a sob. AJ glanced up at the brunette before crashing into his found fathers embrace. Daryl dropped to his knees, holding both of his kids tightly as he cried.
Ellie saw from over Daryl's shoulder as Rick and Glenn ran up. She held her free hand up, stopping them in their tracks.
"Merle?" Glenn mouthed to her, panting heavily. The girl shook her head.
THE GROUP PACKED up anything and everything they needed, ready for their next step in their survival. Ellie didn't want to do it, and evidently neither did Carl.
The boy held both his heavy bags as he stormed up to the trunk of the SUV.
"Carl." Rick tried to help him, but he just pushed his fathers hands off him and kept walking.
Glenn watched as Carl basically tossed his bag into the stuffed trunk and stormed the other way. "I've never seen him this mad." He said softly to Rick. "Even with Lori. He just shut down."
"He's still a kid." Rick glanced over his shoulder. "It's easy to forget."
Ellie walked past them, a half asleep AJ on her back as she went towards the SUV. Rick opened the back door for her, waiting till she got the boy in and tucked around bags before closing it.
"You ridin' with your dad?" The leader looked down at her.
"I think so, yeah." She nodded, glancing off to where his bike was. "Don't worry about Carl, he'll understand."
Ellie walked towards her father just as Carol helped pull him up. They kept their hands connected for a moment longer before the woman walked off.
"Hey, you okay?" Ellie grabbed his bag of arrows off the ground and hoisted it over her shoulder.
Daryl nodded, chewing on his lip. "Yeah, I'm all right. You? AJ?"
Ellie shrugged. "We're okay as long as you are." The Dixon man nodded, putting an arm around her shoulders and walked off.
Ellie was with Carl, Beth, Hershel, and AJ, hiding out in the woods as the others fought within the walls.
As soon as the Woodbury people realized they were set up, they ran.
They left so quickly the dust hadn't even settle before they were off the street. Unfortunately, they left of behind.
Ducking behind the camouflaged cars, Ellie and Carl perked up when twists snapped in front of them.
Carl whirled around, gun raised high and confidently.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't shoot." It was a boy, no more than a year older than them. And he looked scared.
"Drop it." Ellie backed her friend up, holding her gun up as well.
"Sure. Here, take it." The boy leaned forward, his hands up as he went to drop the gun on the ground. He never had the chance to, however, as Carl pulled the trigger and a silenced shot hit the boy right in the forehead.
Ellie gasped quietly, eyes wide as she glanced back at Hershel. He looked appalled and shocked at his actions.
Running into the cell block, AJ jumped up on a seat to find his father.
"Dad!" He called, running to the man and wrapping him into an embrace. Ellie was quick behind him, dropping their bags and walking to him.
"Hey, you guys okay?" Daryl looked them over for injuries.
