CHAPTER ELEVEN,
scared
————————
ELLIE STOOD AT the top of the metal stairs with Carol, watching at the short haired woman put blankets in a basket for Judith.
"You've got a knack for that." The woman complimented Beth as she walked slowly up the stairs, the fussing baby in her arms.
"Just trying to do my part." The Greene girl shrugged.
"Sophia used to wake the neighbors." Carol spoke softly as she remembered her daughter. "Three A.M. Like clockwork. Ed stayed at a friends most nights till she calmed down."
Beth smiled down at the baby. "I always wanted a child." She hesitated a moment, glancing a Ellie who was looking at the baby with a soft smile. "She wouldn't have made it if Daryl hadn't been here. He couldn't stand to lose anyone else."
"Sounds like him." Carol nodded, slowly her motions as she grew sadder.
"I don't see why he had to leave." Beth shifted the baby. "Merle sounds like a jerk."
"Major jerk." Ellie scoffed a sad laugh. "Men like Merle get into your head and make you feel like you deserve how they treat you."
"The abuse." Carol said for the girl.
"Even for Daryl?" Beth asked calmly.
"Especially for Daryl." Ellie leaned her arms on the railing in front of her with a sigh.
Carol nodded slightly. "I'm hardly the woman I was a year ago, but if Ed walked through that door right now breathing and told me to go with him, I'd like to think I'd tell him to go to hell."
"You would." The Greene girl encouraged her.
"It doesn't matter." The short haired woman walked around Ellie, pulling a blanket from the railing were it dried.
"We're weak without him." Beth pointed out, speaking of the Dixon man.
Ellie shrugged. "We'll get through it, as usual."
"Tyreese and his friends seem capable." Carol added on.
"I'm pissed at him for leavin'." Beth sighed softly.
"Me too, Bethy." The Dixon girl chuckled sadly.
"Don't be." Carol glanced at the girls. "Daryl has his code. This world needs men like that." She smiled, motioning for the teen to pass the baby to her. Just then, Judith began to fuss, making the three women chuckle softly.
