CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE,
north star
————————
THAT NIGHT, CARL sat on the porch with Judith on his lap. The two Grimes children looking up at the sky.
"See that bright one?" Carl asked softly, pointing up briefly. Judith copied him, pointing her finger up. "Yeah, that's the North Star. It's at the end of the Little Dipper. If you get lost at night, just find that star."
Ellie, who had been watching the interaction for a while, knocked on the doorframe she was leaning against. Carl looked over quickly, but relaxed when he saw the girl.
"Hey." She spoke softly, walking forward and leaning her back on the railing in front of him.
Carl looked at her for a long second, taking in her features. She looked absolutely stunning in the moonlight.
"Hey." He finally found the courage to speak. "You okay?" He stood from the rocking chair, standing in front of her with Judith still in his arms.
Ellie smiled softly. "Yeah, I'm good. I want to apologize for today. I was acting rashly. I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry for." Carl took a step closer to her. "I should've told you why we couldn't do it. I shouldn't have yelled at you."
The Dixon girl crossed her arms absentmindedly. "Yeah, but...I mean, I know why you wouldn't let me do it. And I get why you got frustrated."
"I wasn't frustrated at you." The Grimes boy took another step to her, now toe to toe against the railing.
"Then what?" Ellie glanced over his face. Carl looked away, suddenly nervous. She picked up on this.
"What's up, Carl? I've never seen you this red before." She tried to lighten the mood, pinching his cheek. The boy laughed, pulling his face back just a bit for her to let go.
"No, no. It's just..." He sighed. "I don't know."
The Dixon girls eyebrows furrowed, she straightened up and uncrossed her arms.
"Is something wrong? Did I do something?" She asked him, suddenly anxious as well.
"No! No, no, no, no, no. I just don't know how to say it." He shook his head rapidly before looking at her again.
His eye trailed down to her lips unconsciously. "I-I just-" He stopped himself again.
"Carl, come on." Ellie urged him, leaning closer as her voice grew quieter. Her hand gently touched his bicep, causing butterflies to swarm in his stomach. He adjusted his hold on his sister as his hands grew sweaty.
