CHAPTER FORTY-ONE,
grieving
————————
PICKING AT THE skin surrounding her thumb nails, Ellie avoided eye contact as much as possible. Deanna clicked the camera on, walking around to sit on her sofa.
"What happened, Ellie?" She spoke softly, her own grief evident in her voice.
The Dixon girl sighed, pushing her hair from her face. "We had just found the grid specs. There was a walker but it had armor on it. We tried to tell him to wait, but then I saw it. The grenade. We tried to stop him but, it was too late." She took a shuddered breath. "Nicolas said he was dead. He said he checked him. But when we heard him yelling...God...Me and Glenn went to pull him off but Nicolas, he wanted to run. We made him stay, Aiden was stuck and it took more then the two of us to get him off." She gulped. "He ran, and-and he had to go. Aiden told us to. We-We got the lobby and were trapped. Glenn was trying to break the glass to get us all out but...Nicolas panicked. He pushed out, and then Noah got grabbed. We tried to hold him, me and Glenn, we tried so hard." The tears started falling silently. "We had to watch him get torn apart. I can still hear his screaming."
"Okay." Deanna stopped her, moving around the couch to the camera, clicking it off. "Thank you for your time."
Ellie nodded, wiping her tears as she pushed herself to her feet. "I'm so sorry, Deanna." She mumbled as she left the room, walking down the stairs and out of the house quickly.

WHEN THE DIXON girl stepped inside her room, Mimi was there waiting for her.
"Ellie, oh God." She pulled her friend into a hug. "I heard what happened. Are you okay?" She placed her hands on the side of the girls face gently.
"I'm alright. I just want to think about something else right now." She sighed, lying on her back on one of the beds, Mimi flopping down next to her.
"Alright, you wanna hear about Enid?" The Espinosa girl turned her head to the side. Ellie smiled softly, looking kindly at her friend.
"Sure. What's going on?" She asked softly.
Mimi smiled, biting her lip to try to hide it. "Well, we were out in the woods earlier. Saw some walkers and had to hide in a tree. I was so close to kissing her. I think she wanted me to kiss her."
Ellie sat up on her elbow, a bright smile on her face. "Really? What're you gonna do?"
"I don't know! We had a really good conversation at the party, and then after today..." Mimi laughed airily. "I think I'll find her later on, talk to her more. Do you think we're moving too fast?"
