(Y/N)'s POV

I can see it slowly die in each one of them. Their happiness disappeared before my eyes; it made it harder to hold my already crumbling facade.

"W-would you...like to come in?" I opened the door a little wider and stepped aside.

They entered and quickly circled me. They left at least enough space for personal comfort, but they were still close. Alice and Esme were the closest to me, wiping my tears.

"Are you okay? Did something happen?" Esme tilted her head. She offered me a hug to me, and I immediately accepted.

Her hold was icy cold, but it was still comforting. She smelled like freshly baked cookies and expensive perfume.

"You smell like cookies," I whispered to her. My tears slowly died down.

"That's because I made you some." She gently rocked me from side to side.

"Oh, really? That's nice of you, thanks." I rocked with her.

"It's not a problem." She chuckled.  I felt like I could fall asleep in her arms.

From the little I could see around me in her embrace, Jasper had this serious and pained look.

"Jasper?" I called to him; I was now on high alert; he looked like he was in pain. I pulled away from Esme. "Are you okay, Jasper?"

I was concerned about him, but I also felt happy. Why do I feel happy? Does his misery amuse me somehow? That is a problem for another day.

"Hey, Jasper? Do you need to sit down?" I stepped up to him and placed my hand on his shoulder.

I thought I was gentle with my touch, but I suppose not. A soft groan escaped him, and his head snapped to me, his grimace weakly hidden. His eyes looked slightly glazed and unfocused.

What's wrong with him? Does he need to feed? Does he just need air?

"How about we talk outside?" I gently grabbed one of his arms, ready to lead him. He nodded blankly and followed me.

The chilly air outside was welcome, and the smell of pine was fresh and made me want to stay out there.

I closed the glass sliding door behind us and guided him to the only seat on the back porch.

He held on to the plastic green chair's armrests. His head is now hung low.

"Hey, Jasper." I lowered to his height, and I had to tilt my head to see his eyes. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, completely fine. It's just my head hurts." He rubbed his temples.

"Why does your head hurt?" I scrunched my eyebrows. "Is this something that happens if it has been too long since you last drank?"

"No, and it's just a lot to explain. It's fine, really." He mumbled and rubbed his eyes. "Um, what upset you earlier?" He peaked at me through his fingers.

"I had a bad dream. It's..." I looked off to the woods.

"It's a lot to explain?" He snapped my attention back to him.

"Yeah, it is." I chuckled to myself, feeling slightly childish for crying over a dream. "So, how about you go first? What is this all about?"

"I have this ability." He seemed uncomfortable with explaining this to me.

"Yeah, what is it?"  I took one of his hands between mine, rubbing it with my thumbs.

"I can feel and control people's emotions. I normally could do it easily, but it's different with you."

"It's different? How many times have you done this to me?" I felt confused, and a bit violated by him doing that.

"I have only done it twice, and each time my head hurt. It was like my skull was being bashed in. It takes so much effort." He let out a exhausted sigh, looking down at my hands.

'Can he be exhausted? What makes me so different?'

"Why am I different? Can vampires be tired?" I joined him in looking at our hands.

"I don't know, and vampires do not need to sleep." He looked up at me. "I wish I could tell you." He looked upset with his answer.

"It's alright. Maybe, we can figure it out later. You should take a timeout for a little bit until you get yourself together." I stood up, "Come on, we don't have a guest room, but my room will suffice for now."  I gently tugged on his hand.

I led him to my room and onto my bed. "Take your shoes off, please. I don't want dirt on my bed." He followed my wishes, and I pushed my sheets to the side for him to slip under.

"I'm going to go get the others to help with all the moving and make dinner. I'll get you for dinner. Please, relax." I slowly went to my door and closed it gently behind me.

Jasper's POV

I could feel my dead heart pound against my chest. 'They left me alone in their room!'

I had not gotten under the covers yet, so I gently crept out of bed and explored the room.

The room smelled strongly of them, and was covered in knick-knacks of their interests. As much as I cared about their interests, the window grabbed my attention the most.

'Who's their neighbor? Are they creepy?'

W

ith sock-clad feet, I carefully trod over to their window.

The window showed a view of the neighboring house, and I peered over at it. The curtains were drawn, and the room had various shades of dark purple. The lights were out, and they had a chair right in front of the window.

'They live next to a creep. How annoying.' From what I can faintly recall, Bella lives there. I have to talk to Alice about this. I need to know her next moves.

She clearly cannot be trusted. I closed the curtains and moved on. 'The light was hurting my eyes, (Y/N).'

A desk was just below the window. Pencils and papers scattered the table. There was no apparent order, but it was obvious where things should go.

I scanned the desk and spotted a loose red paper clip. It wasn't holding anything, and it was surrounded by fellow brightly colored clips. 'Surely, they won't notice this.' I slipped the clip in my dress pants pocket.

Amongst school supplies, the desk had other objects. One caught my eye faster than the rest, a small jar of coins. The jar said 'gift money' on its front. I fished my pockets for my wallet and took out some coins: ten dimes, four quarters, and two nickels.

I hope this small sum would be helpful to them. I couldn't help but wonder, 'Is this a gift for themselves, a relative, a friend, or a lover?

I couldn't help the smile that graced my face as I finally sunk into the soft mattress, pulling up the sheets.

"Eighty...eighty-four...ninety-two...100 dollars!" Their once-focused look morphed into joy. "I did it! I did it! I saved enough to get.....a gift!" Their fists pounded against their desk. The coins also bounced joyfully, clinking against each other in their dance.

"Oh!" panic set into their heart as a coin or two leaped off the worn-oak table. "I need that!"

The coins narrowly dodged their hands and hid under their bed. "Ugh!"

Once they returned the coins to their glass confines, they embarked on a journey to get the perfect gift.
