but with a tinge of bitterness

like the last dregs of tea mixed in with warm honey

she is your friend, i recited over and over again, savouring the words in the back of my mind, and it felt like both a reassurance and a warning.

maybe in some other universe you won't be joking when you declare "you're mad", and I'll be serious when I reply with a laugh and an "I know"

because you'll be staring at me with horror when you shakily whisper "you're mad", and I'll answer "I know" with a crazed grin on my face and a blade to your throat.

her skin was brown as toasted almonds—those whole, unsliced ones that she loved snacking on all the time. idly, she wondered if kissing her would taste like them, marshmallow-sweet with traces of almond.
