Kabanata 10

Carry

Hindi naman marami ang dadalhin ko, since I still have things in my room in our house. I will try to stay there without rummaging through my room just to ease my hatred towards my parents.

Alas nueve ang flight ko bukas at sa eroplanong pinapalipad ni Captain Lazer ako sasakay since their flights were in the Philippines. I am always thankful because of that.

I called Devon to meet me up at the bar.

I sighed as I sat down on the bar counter, holding a glass of beer.

I took a sip of my glass. Devon smiled widely as she waved back at naglakad papunta sa gawi ko.

"Good evening, Captain," she said enthusiastically. "By the way, this is Glen. Glen, this is Captain Carae," pakilala nito sa lalaking kasama kaya agad akong naglahad ng kamay dito.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Carae." I shook Glen's hand.

"Nice to meet you too, Captain." I smiled at him.

"He's the man I'm talking about, Captain." I smirked and nodded at her knowingly.

Napailing na lang ako dahil kahit na malamlam ang ilaw sa bar counter ay kita ko pa rin ang pamumula sa mukha ni Devon when Glen helped her settle down.

We ordered another shot. Devon ordered tequila, while Glen ordered whisky. I turned around and leaned my back on the bar counter. I stared at the sea of people dancing on the dancefloor, a sea of people who were drinking in their own spots. Watching these people laugh like they don't have problems truly amazed me. Even though I know that behind those roaring laughs and sweet smiles I saw with my naked eyes are some souls that are suffering, fighting their own battles, and crying with broken hearts.

Smiles deceive people to make them believe that they're fine. They make people believe that they can handle everything, even if they're losing hope. Even if they know that in the end they'll lose, and I am one of them. I am one of those people who are suffering. I am one of those people who are shattered inside. I am one of those people who is fighting my own battle.

I sighed heavily.

"I'm taking one week leave again."

"Oh! Neden?" (Why?)

Nagkibit ako ng balikat.

"I'm going back to the Philippines. We're having a celebration for the anniversary of our company." Umisimid ako.

Devon shrugged her shoulders. "That explains why."

Tumango ako at bumuga ng hangin. That explains why. She knew already that I was having a hard time dealing with my family.

"Ilang araw ka doon?"

"I'm taking a one-week leave." Parang isang taon na iyon sa akin. Staying in the same place with my family feels like the clock is stopping. It feels like I am slowly sinking into quicksand. It feels like I'm stuck in a maze with nowhere to go.
