Kabanata 29
Limit

I spent my weekend just like usual—roaming around the hospital’s garden every morning, riding a wheelchair and Arshed is the one who pushed it from behind, whenever we’re done, balik na ulit sa kwarto at buong araw nang nakaupo o nakahiga sa kama.

It seems so boring for a woman like me who loves traveling around the world and going anywhere for adventure. But Arshed always made sure that I won’t feel bored. He has a lot in mind to entertain me. He talks about his life when he was just a teen and he was in his father’s house.

Just like now, instead of spending my afternoon sleeping, I chose to have a chat with him. Nakakapagod din ang lagi na lang matulog.

“So, ilan kayong magkapatid? Or do you even have?” tanong ko habang sinusubukan kong ayusin ang pagkaka-shade ng kulay sa painting na ginagawa namin.

“I do have one, two years younger than me.”

“A boy or a girl?” I curiously asked.

“A boy,” maikling sagot nito tsaka pinagpatuloy ang ginagawa.

“Oh!” I’m a bit excited to know that he has a brother. For sure they love and support each other. They have their back to each other. “So, what is he doing now? And is he in Sicily?” I added.

Arshed side-eyed me again and furrowed his brows before he continued what he was doing.

“Yes, he is in Sicily. He also once joined the military, then he quit for unknown reasons and went back home, then worked under our father’s company.”

I am thrilled because of what I have learned. Knowing that his brother once trained under the military thrilled me. Sigurado akong kapag nakilala ko iyon, magkakasundo kami, since I once joined the military too.

“I’m excited to know him,” masayang saad ko dahilan para tuluyang humarap sa akin si Arshed na magkasalubong ang mga makakapal na kilay.

“You what?” he growled.

I looked at him with a smile plastered on my lips.

“I’m thrilled to meet your brother. I hope I will meet him someday. I know magkakasundo kami, since I was once in the military too,” masaya ko paring saad, pero hindi nagbago ang hitsura ni Arshed.

“What is he doing in his free time? You know, I want to know him so I need to know what he likes and don’ts, para kapag—”

“You won’t meet him!” he cut my words off with conviction, kaya unti-unting napawi ang ngiti ko.

“W-Why? Is he... dea—”

“No. He isn’t fucking dead. But I don’t want you to meet him. End of the discussion!” he cut my words off again.

My excitement vanished immediately.

Maybe he doesn’t want me to meet his brother, because of course, for what?

I can sense something in Arshed’s voice, kaya hindi na lang ako nagpumilit pa. I know my limits, kaya nanahimik na lang ako.

‘I know my limits,’ I reminded myself. I really love talking to people who have the same passion as mine, kaya ganoon ang naging reaksiyon ko. I didn’t intend any harm. I was just too thrilled... too happy. I didn’t notice that I was out of my boundaries already. I should be thankful that Arshed somehow shared his life with me, even just a tiny part of it.
