Sua drifted in and out of consciousness.

It was always dark and no matter how hard she tried, her eyes wouldn't adjust to the darkness. All she could see was pitch black. The rag tied to her face made it even harder to see but it kept the dust away from her nose so she was slightly grateful for it.

She had tried to sit up but she could hardly move. Her hands and legs were tied, she realized with dismay. She struggled against the bonds but the struggle drained her of what little energy she had and she passed out again.

She came to again not knowing how much time had passed since she had been thrown into this place. She tried to scream but no sound came out. Her throat was parched, her eyes gritty. The dust was making her face itch. Thirst and hunger were burning through her. She struggled to breathe. Her head felt heavy. Even the slightest movement caused her tremendous pain and made her pass out again.

Just let me die, she thought when she woke again. She couldn't live like this anymore. She had been held against her will for almost 2 years before Song-i had helped her escape captivity only to be captured again by these thugs, she thought tears springing up in her eyes again.

But this time was so much worse for her.

The gang that had captured her when she had reached Busan two years ago, in search of her mother's family, had known who she was and had demanded ransom from her father for her release. They had held her captive till they realized that her father would never acknowledge her existence and so would never pay ransom risking his political position. They had beaten her bloody then, trying to scare her father into paying. Little did they know, her father had never cared for her. She was a nuisance to him. A dirty secret that was supposed to be buried. She had his eyes, though that was the extent of her resemblance to him. She looked entirely like her mother and was even given her name. She had been hidden away sent to private schools and lived with caretakers who were extremely professional and did their job well but never really cared for the little girl in their care.

After her captors realised she wasn't worth the food they were feeding her, she had been sold to another gang who trafficked women and young girls. She was probed and prodded by so called 'medical professionals' who declared that she was a virgin. Which had turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The fact that she spoke English well - being raised in the United States - was another blessing. She had learned Korean hoping, dreaming to one day be able to move to Korea and find her mother's home.

So, instead of making her work as a prostitute she was made to dress up and attend parties to keep sleazy 'businessmen' entertained. That is where she had met Song-i who had immediately taken Sua under her wing. Caring for her, feeding her, dressing her, showing her the ropes.

It was when Song-i had found out that Sua was meant to be sold to the highest bidder at an auction for virgins, that she had hatched a plan to escape. It was a perfect plan and then it had all gone so wrong. Her heart squeezed as she remembered the way the light had gone out of her friend's eyes.

She was held captive for so long but all the while her captors had cared for her well-being because they expected to be rewarded for it.

But now, she was a liability. A witness to a crime. She wasn't sure she would survive another day. Not sure she wanted to anymore.

What did she have to live for anyway? She thought bitterly. Her father didn't want her. Her mother was gone. None of her friends had tried to find her after she went missing, showing her just how much they cared. Who would she go back to? Who would want her?

No one. She answered herself.

She just wished she could've been able to keep her promise to Song-i and find her brother.

Just let me die, she thought again as she drifted out of consciousness.
