The cave had been lit by torches lining the walls, which was a relief. If I had to do any fighting, it would be a bit easier if I could see. Sebastian and I shared a cautious look before continuing forward with our wands drawn.
We went down the winding tunnel, running into no one. "Well that's a bit suspicious," Sebastian said, as we approached the cavern.
Upon first glance, there was no one there at all. But as we inspected it further, the ground was littered in dead bodies. I winced, seeing them lying there, covered in blood.
"What the hell happened here?" Sebastian queried, as we looked. "This doesn't make any sense."
"There were still people outside in the camp, guarding this," I said. "Do you think something happened in here to make them all die? What could've happened?"
"Well obviously nobody outside knows anything about what happened, or they probably wouldn't still be there."
"Maybe they tried to harvest the magic from the crystals?" I suggested. "If something bad happened to them because of that, then that would explain why nobody out there knows it happened yet."
"There's really no way to know," Sebastian said.
The amount of dead bodies in here was gruesome. The red lighting from the crystals made the sight even more sinister. "We should go through the back entrance," I said. "See where it pops out."
"We could still do that in the morning," Sebastian said.
"Well maybe not," I rolled my eyes. He still wanted to turn back. "There could be more men tomorrow. If more come and see what happened to the camp outside and see in here, they might increase security. It might not be so easy to get this far."
"I suppose you're right."
He followed me as I led the way through the other tunnel. It was lit up as well, and when we reached the end, there wasn't a camp on the other side. It spit out almost directly next to Hogsmeade. "Easy access to anyone who lives in Hogsmeade," I noted. "It's definitely going to be worth it to go there tomorrow, see what we can find out about the two men we saw the other night. We can head back to the castle now, if you're ready."
"I've been ready since I got here," he said. He was still being short with me.
I let out a heavy sigh and considered saying something to him about it but decided it wasn't worth it.
We headed back towards the castle, this time taking the path out of Hogsmeade, avoiding the cave and the forest this time. I tried to start conversations with Sebastian, but he was only giving me one word answers, or no answer at all. I suddenly stopped and stood in front of him, making him stop too.
"What?" he said.
"Really? 'What'? That's all you have to say right now? You know full well what my issue is right now," I sighed.
"I don't really feel like discussing this right now," he said, trying to move past me. I grabbed his arm and made him face me again. I couldn't read the expression on his face.
"I'm getting tired of this, Sebastian," I sighed. "Just tell me whatever it was that I did, so we can move past this."
"You didn't do anything," he said. "I'm sorry if I've been short with you, but I just haven't been in the mood to talk."
"Haven't been in the mood to talk to me, you mean. You seemed to have had no problem striking up conversation with literally anybody else. I saw you in the commons, you know."
He didn't say anything. His silence gave me every answer I was looking for.
"If you're tired of me already, just say so," I breathed, defeated at this point. Trying to figure him out was getting exhausting. "You haven't talked to me since class, which literally only tells me one thing, and I get it- I get that I've done a lot of awful things. But you did too, Sebastian, and you can't be associating all of those memories with me, just because I was there too. We went through the same shit. So if you're needing to talk about it, I 'm here, you know. But it seems that you just don't want to speak to me at all."
"Are you done now?" he finally said. Ouch. Really? That's all you have to say?
"Fuck you," I spat, turning around and walking away.
"Where are you going?" he shouted at me.
"Anywhere away from you!" I shouted back. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. He really had nothing to say to me. I just wish he'd tell me what I'd done to upset him. I gave him every opportunity in the world to do so, but he just wouldn't tell me. So the fact that we're not talking right now is all his fault.
I stormed off towards the quidditch field, not really sure where I was going. I just needed space. I looked back to make sure he wasn't coming after me again, and I was relieved to see he hadn't. I only made it so far before I stopped and crouched down, wrapping my arms around my legs.
I hated this. I hated fighting with him, but I didn't even know what I'd done in the first place to deserve this kind of treatment from him. I only wished he would tell me.
