I breathed in a deep breath and air, the humid dewdrops clinging to my body. I wore a short-sleeve shirt and knee-low cargo shorts (or a skirt) to make sure I wouldn't get heat stroke inside the greenhouse, at least not so quickly.
I had constructed a small though flourishing greenhouse in my backyard, I wanted to conduct a experiment to see if I could reform the rainforest ecosystem in a small area. It was a small project, though one I was passionate about.
I felt a tingle on my leg and saw a small, fuzzy caterpillar clinging to my knee, looking up at me with curiosity. I gingerly took it in my palm and smiled. "Hey there, little guy. You sure are colorful, ain't' cha?" I lightly petted it down its torso, entranced by its blue, pink, yellow, and green markings. Caterpillars were easily my favorite insect.
I put it down in a patch of plants, though soon noticed that the soil was dry and quenched. I was confused, the environment around it should've slowed it to acclimate to the temperatures. "I stood up, dusted myself off, and -making sure not to step on the creatures under me- left the greenhouse.
The sun above was shining bright with small fluffy clouds bottling over the sky. I left the greenhouse door open for just a few more minutes to let a bit of more thin air enter, and then I closed the door.
I took a deep breath of fresh air and, going around to the front of my house, grabbed my bike. I heard of a new stop a little ways away from here...maybe it has fertilizer. I hopped on my bike and began speeding down the dirt road. I wasn't in a rush, but I liked the wind in my face and the slight risk of breaking all my bones.
I soon arrived at the shop and threw my bike on the ground before dusting myself off again and fixing my wind-blown hair (if you don't have hair then you just brushed your head idk).
I opened the store door witch triggered the small gold bell above it. I looked around. The store was almost fully stocked, and clean. Neatly swept, not a speck of dust in sight. I stepped up to the counter.
The tall man behind it turned around, leaning two of his four arms on the counter, he put the other two on his right hip and smiled brightly. "Howdy there neighbor! Welcome to my store! The name's Howdy!" He pointed at his name tag, still smiling. "What can I get for ya today?"
My eyes went wide as I stuttered on words. "Y-you're a caterpillar?..." Howdy nodded. "Comes from the mom's side! Now, how can I help you?"" He asked again.
"Oh! Yes, I'm sorry. Do you have fish oil fertilizer ?" I asked, drumming my fingers on the counter. He turned his back and reached on the lowest shelf, he turned and heavily set it down. "There ya go! That'll be 14.95!" He said cheerfully. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a dirty fifteen dollars. "You can keep the change..." I said, putting the money in his hand as he smiled. Geez this guy was tall.
"Would you like to start an account in case you want a tab?" He asked, pulling out a small notepad and clicking a pen. I thought for a moment. "Sure, why not?"
"Alrighty then, name?"
"y/n l/n" I said
He quickly scribbled it down, along with the date.
"Birthday?"
"(your birthday)"
Howdy scribbled that down as well and tore the page out, posting it next to his cash register with an array of other accounts. "Y/n...charming name." He complimented sweetly.
I suddenly blushed, drumming my fingers on the counter. "Thank you...Howdy is a pretty cool name too.... I say meekly. Howdy put my money in the cash register. "Ya think so? That's mighty sweet!" He hesitated a moment before taking out his notepad again and scribbling down an array of numbers before handing it to me.
I looked at it and blushed even more. It was a phone number. "For you! We also are in association with the post office. So we can do deliveries and such..." i noticed a light shade of pink form across his face as his eye contact with me broke.
I smiled, shoving the number in my pocket. "Thank you Howdy. I'll make sure to call." His eyes brightened as he heard that. I lugged the bag of fertilizer over my shoulder and waved goodbye to him. He waved a weak goodbye as well as he rested his face in his hands.
When I got home, I took the number out of my pocket and stared at it for a long time. I chuckled and taped it to the wall next to my phone, promising myself I would call, and then heading back out to the greenhouse with the fertilizer.
