The rain had gotten much, much worse. Muddy streams were now steadily flowing off the hillside and into the road. Rain will poured down sharp, cold drops.
The knee-high rainboots I had bought a while ago had finally come in handy to keep from the water soaking my feet. I gingerly walked on the side of the rain, where at least four inches of rainwater was spilled onto the fields.
All the lightbulbs had died in the time of me staying in the house to avoid the developing flood. Howdy's was the only place close enough that had them in stock. Town would be too much of a hassle, besides, it would probably take forever to get there.
I kept an emergency backpack with me just in case filled with flares, my phone, an aluminum blanket, and two bottles of water. I cursed myself for not packing emergency food beforehand.
I finally saw the outline and lights of Howdy's shop, relived it was still open. I had to give respect points to Howdy for keeping open his shop for so long, especially in these conditions.
I arrived at the stop and stepped in, wiping my feet on he mat and sweeping my raincoat hood from my head, running my fingers through my ruffled hair away from my eyes (if you don't have hair you wiped splatters of mud from your raincoat).
"Welcome to the shop." A voice said unenthusiastically. I looked up at Howdy, who was leaning on the shop counter. I tired expression painted on his face and dark bags clearly visible under his half-lidded eyes. I walked to the counter and looked up at Howdy with concern. "Gosh, Howdy. Not to be insensitive, but you look like a walking nightmare..."
Howdy sighed. "I know, it's just hard to trudge from my house every day on a sleepless night worrying about the shop." He said, lightly knocking on the countertop with his knuckles. "But it's worth it for folks like you to come in here once in a blue moon in these times." He forced a weak smile.
I smiled back, flattered. "You're too sweet Howdy. But you should think about taking a break soon. The shop won't float away..." with luck. I thought to myself.
"Anyway, whaddya' need today?" He said, gently ignoring my worry. I gave him another concerned expression before signing and letting it go. "Two lightbulb boxes please." I said, Howdy effortlessly grabbed two boxes of lightbulbs from the back shelf behind him and placed it on the counter. "That'll be eleven ninty-five." He said flatly.
I searched through my pack pack, finally pulling out a crumpled twelve dollars. "You can keep the change." I said, drumming my fingers at my sides.
Howdy slid the boxes to me and placed the money in the register. "Have you had a lot of customers lately?" I asked. Trying to fill the dead air. Howdy sighed again. "Your the first one in three days." He said, leaning on the counter with two of his left arms and his two right arms on his lower hip. "So...you've just been waiting here in silence? Nothing else?" I asked, Howdy shrugged. "Basically. Eight to midnight every night since the rain began."
