I sat down in the open field, the sky was dark and cloudy with the foreshowing of oncoming rain. It would be the last time to see the few blooming flowers before the storm dropped and the rest of the field would spring to life.

I sat with my knees to my chest, gingerly picking one flower out of a stalk in front of me. It was a bluish-purple, but not exactly violet. I examined it for a moment, turning it and taking in its delicately designed leaves before pressing it in my journal and scribbling notes.

I didn't even hear the rustling of the grass behind me when I heard a voice. "Hello." I turned around a saw Frank.

I didn't know him very well, we hadn't talked much, but I know him from being friends with Sally, he seemed like an ok guy. Just quietly judgmental. But that's really all. He wore a short-brimmed hat with a small leather shoulder bag, along with a vest with multiple little pens clipped to the pockets.

"Hello, Frank. Fine day we're having, yes?" I greet politely, though Frank simply returns it with a curt nod.

"What are you doing out here?" He asked, his voice lacking emotion. I tapped my pen to knee. "Just observing the plants before the storm. You?"

"Something like that." He said.

A beat of silence passed. "Would you like to join me?" I said, patting on the flattened patch of grass next to me. Frank looked up at the sky a moment before sighing and taking his place next to me. I continued to scribble down notes until Frank spoke up. "Are you a botanist?"

"Sure am! I've always loved plants." I clicked my pen and put it back in my pocket. Frank nodded in acknowledgment, looked at his watch, then up at the sky. Confused, I looked up too. And I saw a butterfly.

I immediately yelped and stumbled back, propelling myself backwards with my legs. I curled into a ball in a tall patch of grass and then wrapped my hands over my head. I peeked through my fingers and I saw Frank standing over me, staring at me in pure confusion.

"What's the matter?" He asked, reaching his hand to me. I hesitantly took it as he helped me up, though I was still shaking from fear. "Nothing...I just don't like...uh...-" I was too embarrassed to admit it. "Butterflies?" Frank guessed. "Umm...yeah."

"Why don't you like them?" Frank asked, curious. "I've just always had bad dreams about them..." I could tell him more, but I held my pride. Their curly tongues , furry bodies, and small spikes legs always creeped me out.

I expected Frank to shame me for it, though he simply shrugged and reached into his leather bag.

He grabbed a small plastic bottle, no smaller then the small eyedrops you find in purses. "Hold you your hand." He said. I did and he squeezed a few drops of it into my palm.

"What is it?" I asked, squinting at the odd substance. "It's nectar. It's attracts butterflies." My blood turns to ice as I immediately think to frantically shake it off before the bugs attack me. Though before I could, Frank took my hand and lifted it to the sky. I wanted to pull it away, but I was frozen in fear.

I soon saw a blue-winged butterfly flutter towards us, and I though I would faint. Though before I knew it, the butterfly was on my hand, licking the nectar with its short spiral tongue. The creature was so light that I was convinced that if  I hadn't been looking directly at it, I probably wouldn't have even known it was there.

Frank let go of my hand as I brought the butterfly to my face. I was awed by the texture of the wings, the markings that wrapped it's small body...such a delicate creature.

I looked at Frank and he smiled, obviously proud of himself. I scoffed at his ego as the butterfly flew away back into the sky, finishing its nectar.

"That was...incredible." I said, still watching the Butterfly fly away. "Pretty cool right?" Frank was still smiling. "I was always so scared of them..." I said, half to myself.

"Their as harmless as a tuft of dandelion fur, there's nothing to be scared of." I looked back at Frank and smiled so wide that I thought it would fall of my face, shaking his hand vigorously. "Thank you so much Frank! You have no idea how much this means to me!" Frank looked slightly startled as I shook his hand. "Uh..your welcome? It was rally no trouble." He said, wiping his shaken hand on his vest.

"Hopefully more of them will appear once the sun begins to shine again. That butterfly was called the rain-tipped monarch. It's one of the most prominent signs of an oncoming storm." He said matter-of-factly.

"Really?! Wow! Do you think you could teach me some more another time? One scientist to another?"

Frank scratched the back of his head awkwardly, though smiled. "I suppose so, if you can teach me some of your botany."

I gasped. "I would love to!"
