I left my house wearing see-though raincoat and knee-high blue rainboots, along with an umbrella for extra measure. I worried that even with my equipment I would get soaked in the morning downpour. I slung my canvas bag over my shoulder and began the walk.
The sky was a dark iron-gray, the clouds above even darker. The gritty dirt road leading through the neighborhood had already turned to thick, pooling mud.
I had awoken this morning to the heavy pattering of the raindrops at about 6:30. The forecast said that the rain would last from today to at least next week non-stop. The neighborhood will be lucky if a flood won't ensue. I've already had to place multiple small buckets around my house from roof leaks.
I stepped lightly through the pools of mud in the road, though quickly began to hurry, overtaken by my urge to get out of the pouring rain. Flecks of mud splattering on my knees.
A long while later, I finally arrived at Howdy's shop, which- to my relief- wasn't closed yet. I opened the door and greeted Howdy, who's shoes were covered in mud from the trudge from his house.
I purchased a lantern with fuel in case the power went out and three boxes green tea. Howdy wished me well and I left the store, the rain somehow much worse. I placed the items in my bag and began the walk back to my home.
After a long while of walking back down the muddy road, thankful to be back in my (mostly) dry home, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. For a moment I thought it was just a patch of bright flowers under a tree, but when I looked closer, I saw the figure of a person hunched under a tree.
I began walking towards the figure, off the road and into the field. Under the tree, I saw wally hunched over with his knees to his face and his hair dripping with rainwater. His clothes were also getting soaked.
I stood there for a while, thinking he would see me until I spoke. "Wally?"
Wally looked up, small lines of eyeliner running from his lower eyelids. "Oh, hello y/n! Such a nice day we're having, don't you agree?" He said, his smile weak and shaky. I cocked my head in confusion. "I wouldn't exactly say that..."
A beat of silence passed before I spoke again. "What are you doing out here in this weather? Without a raincoat or boots at that?" I asked. Wally smiled again. "I kind of like when it rains."
I sighed. "Please tell the truth." Wally's smile dropped and he lowered his eyes to the ground. "Home was mad so it locked me out..." I adjusted the bag on my shoulder. "Why did it do that?" Wally shrugged sadly.
Another beat of silence passed before I took his hand in mine and hoisted him up, a shocked look on Wally's face as I began to walk back to the road. "What are you doing?" He asked gently. "You getting washed away in the oncoming flood won't help anybody, will it?" You can stay at my house until home has calmed down." Without another thought, I began walking down the road with Wally in hand.
We finally reached my house, the water already beginning to pool around the marigolds lining my porch. I opened the door and ushered Wally inside, shutting it behind me and heavily setting my canvas bag down on my wooden kitchen table. Wally standing at the other side awkwardly.
