I currently was carrying a large box of microscopes, pushpins, small mirrors and other nonsense down the road. It wasn't such of a chore, but it was still odd to see a box of such breakable material just scattered about.
I was fairy new in the neighborhood, and Sally had asked me to bring a box of Frank's things back to his house that she had borrow for a stage performance. She told me the Frank studied butterflies and other winged insects, but I had never expected it to be such an intriguing hobby.
I made it my main priority not to fall. I probably would never forgive myself if I broke any of Frank's things, even if I didn't even know the guy. I ducked under branches and stepped widely over shallow puddles with caution.
I walked up to what Sally described as Frank's house. I stepped onto the wooden porch and knocked. No answer. I knocked again. No answer. Huffing in exasperation, I hung my head, where I saw a small note.
I bent down and picked it up, it had a dirty piece of tape on it, meaning it probably fell of the door. I squirted my eyes at the loopy cursive writing.
I'm in the North field until late evening. Please don't bother me.
I taped the note back onto the door and thought to myself. Well, he said don't bother me. But this is pretty important, besides- if I leave this stuff on his front door someone may come around and steal it...
The note said the North field, and so I looked behind the house. Sure enough. A large, rolling field that must've stretched miles led to a thick-wooded forest just nearby. The field was dotted with flowers of all sorts as the birds chirped overhead.
I walked across the field, embracing the warm sunshine on my fur and the radiant colors of the flowers.
Soon enough, I saw a grey figure in near the distance, hunched over a hardcover notebook and mumbling to himself.
As I approached, I reached out my hand to gingerly touch his shoulder. "Excuse me, but is your name Fr-" Frank immediately spun around and grabbed my hand, standing upwards in a second with a seething look. "What the he-" his anger instantly faltered as he looked up at me with wide, shocked eyes. I couldn't blame the guy, I practically towered over him a good foot or two.
A beat of silence passed before he pulled his hand away from mine and cleared his throat. "And who are you supposed to be?" He asked in a cocky tone. "Y/n. I'm assuming your Frank?"
"Yes, I am. What are you doing here?" He huffed, I set down the box in front of him. "Sally just asked me to bring you back your supplies and whatnot." Frank looked down at the box with sudden admiration, then back up to me. "Well...thank you very much..."
Another moment of silence passed before Frank spoke again. "So, you new to the neighborhood?" He asked. I nodded. "Yeah, just moved here about a week ago. So sorry we haven't met yet," I said with just a hint of sarcasm. I smiled playfully.
Frank must've picked up on it, he rolled his eyes and scoffed. "What a tragedy, truly..." A smiled softly and...blushed?
"Last thing we need is another tall fella in the neighborhood. Everyone here is either eight feet or twelve apples tall." He chuckled. I laughed as well. "Well, you seem just the right amount of tall. To me, at least."
"Just curious, but what kind of...insect would you say you are? I know it's personal, I just do research on such matters, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone like you before..." I was caught off guard by the question, but just kinda rolled with it. "Well, I'm eighty percent flannel moth and ten percent puss moth. We never really figured out what the other ten percent was." I shrugged.
Frank smiled and furrowed his brow. "Fascinating..." his whispered, mostly to himself. I was flattered by his intrigue, to the point where I even lightly blushed at the thought.
"Well, I should get going. Sally offered me a job interview as a co-director that I gotta get to in about ten minutes." I smiled.
"Oh! Ok then. You should go." Frank waved me off, and I began hurriedly walking from the field.
"Wait!" Frank yelled after me, and so I turned around, confused. Frank caught up to me. "Do you think that maybe we could...talk again? Tomorrow perhaps?" He asked sheepishly, smiling. I smiled back. "I would love that!" I turned again, looking behind me and waving goodbye. "See you then!" Frank waved me off again, and I disappeared down the road.
