I sat in my quiet, dimly lit home, the rays of the setting sun through my window the only source of light. A scattered array of music sheet spread out in front of me. I ran my fingers through my hair (if you don't have hair you just scratched your head) and let out a stressed sigh. With my knees bent to my face in the chair, I attempted to sort through the music sheets. Though I just ended up tossing them back on the table with an angry spurt of yelling.
I felt embarrassed, throwing myself a pity party by myself. I turned to look at myself in the mirror against the far wall and immediately looked away. My hair (or eyebrows idk) was matted, my fingernails were bitten down to the flesh and my eyes wore a dull, faraway expression.
I suddenly heard a knock at my door. I grunted- annoyed- and stood to answer it, my violin bow still in hand.
I threw the door open and pointed the violin bow at the individual at the door. I was about to spit angry things at them for interrupting my raging anger session. I stopped myself as I saw Barnaby with a full bag of groceries in his large paws, looking down at me with a startled, though blank expression.
I rubbed my forehead with my palm and sighed. "I'm sorry Barnaby, come in." I huffed, trying to focus my breathing. Barnaby cleared his throat and walked in the house, gently setting the full bag on the table. "Eddie was sick today, so I offered to deliver your groceries..." he said, not really making eye contact.
I walked over to the table and looked in the bag skeptically. Barnaby was right. In the bag was sourdough bread, marmite, basil, and aspirin. "Wow Barnaby...Thank you so much, what a kind offer." I looked up from the bag at him. He shrugged. "No big deal. I was around." He took a closer look at me and tilted his head, a worried look on his face. "Are...you ok? You don't look so swell..."
I sat heavily back down in the kitchen table chair, rubbing my tear ducts with my thumb and forefinger. "I know...I've just been really stressed out. I have an audition out of town in two days and I still can't learn the song I'm supposed to perform."
Barnaby sat in a rocking chair across from me, giving a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry about that..."
A beat of silence past before Barnaby spoke again. "May I hear it? I have a critic's ears. I can give advice."
I looked up at him. I mean, he was a fellow performer. Maybe he could give some helpful advice. I sighed and grabbed my violin, placing the end piece on my chin and breathing deeply.
(this is the song you play, just copy the link if you wanna hear it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSyZz7ubR_Q
When the song was finished. I look up at Barnaby, who's mouth was slightly agape, elbows propped on his knees. As I looked at him, I suddenly began to feel very vulnerable, and I felt tears pricking in the corners of my eyes and running down my face.
Barnaby saw me begin to cry and jumped up, suddenly hugging me. Since he was much taller, when he hugged me, he practically lifted me a good foot off the ground. My violin and bow still in hand. "No! Don't cry! You did great! Don't feel embarrassed..."
I was still shocked from the sudden hug. though in a moment, I hugged Barney back, my hands not even close to wrapping all the way around his body.
Barnaby put me down gently and writes the tears gently away from my face with his thumb and smiled warmly. "You did so good, I don't see why you shouldn't rock the auditions." I smiled weakly back at him. "Thank you Barnaby..." I sniffed, still holding in my shaky voice.
"Maybe you should take a break," he suggested. "Have some food, drink some water...wash your hair..." I chuckled at his last suggestion, thankful for the humorous energy radiating from Barnaby.
"I guess...that would be good." I breathed out deeply and Barnaby smiled. "If you need me for anything else, I'm just down the street..."
I smiled again at Barney, wiping the last of my tears hastily away from my sleeve. "You have no idea how much you've helped, really." I said. Barnaby opened the door and glanced over his shoulder one more time with a sweet smile before closing the door behind him. "Any time..."
