SWEET NOTHING
by : madelyn peters

| II |

I spy with my little tired eye,
Tiny as a firefly,
A pebble that we picked up last July

Madelyn, Karen, and Lucas jumped from the car when they rolled up at the bridge to see a distraught Haley, no Nathan, and a broken bridge railing.

"It was Cooper. And they went over the bridge and then Nathan jumped over, and he hasn't come up for a really long time," Haley cried. Madelyn grabbed onto her tightly, holding her back from doing something irrational.

A body floated up to the surface.

"Nathan!" Haley screamed.

"Oh god," Lucas muttered, pulling his jacket off and rushing toward the side.

"Lucas! Careful!" Madelyn yelled as he jumped.

"Did you call 911?!" Karen asked urgently,

"I did! I called them!" Haley responded. They turned back to the water. "Help him, Luke!" Lucas grabbed onto him and started pulling him to the shore Karen was rushing toward. "Nathan!" Haley yelled again, Madelyn holding her tighter against her.

"It's Cooper!" Lucas yelled up to them and dove back in.

Down deep inside your pocket,
We almost forgot it,
Does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?

"I can't find them!" Lucas yelled, coming up to the surface again.

"What?!" Haley screamed back.

"I can't find them," he repeated.

"What do you mean? He's down there!" Haley stated.

"No, the car's empty!" Luke explained. "Nathan!" He started yelling as well.

"Nathan!" Haley and Madelyn yelled, looking around.

Lucas's eye was caught by something on the shore.

"Haley don't look!" he started swiming.

"Oh god," Haley cried, Madelyn pulled her into her, turning her body away from the two people laying in the dirt by the water.

They said the end is coming
Everyone's up to something
I find myself running home to your sweet nothings

._._._.

Outside they're push and shoving,
You're in the kitchen humming
All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing

Haley and Lucas sat numbly on the couch in the waiting room.

"Someone should call Dan," Lucas stated, standing from the couch. Madelyn took his seat, pulling Haley into her embrace.

On the way home, I wrote a poem,
You say "What a mind,"
This happens all the time

._._._.

'Cause they say the end is coming,
Everyone's up to something,
I find myself running home to your sweet nothings

The gang found themselves in Nathan's room after hearing that he was awake and talking.

"So what? Wedding wasn't enough, you needed even more attention?" Lucas asked jokingly.

"Thank you, Luke," Nathan grabbed his hand.

"For what?" he asked.

"For saving my life," Nathan said obviously,

"I just got Cooper to shore, man. You're the one who saved everybody. You're a hero, Nate."

Nathan just grew confused.

Outside they're push and shoving,
You're in the kitchen humming,
All that you ever wanted from me was nothing

Industry disruptors and soul deconstructors,
And smooth-talking hucksters,
Out glad-handing each other

Madelyn and Lucas walked along the pier, taking a break from the hospital.

"Hey so look, while I was talking with my mom I found your purse and it had a pregnancy test in it," Lucas stated, asking for an explaination.

"We all got the same purse as wedding gifts," Madelyn shook her head.

"It had that purfume you wear. And some crumpled papers with lyrics on them," Lucas added.

"It's not my- look, I'm not pregnant," she promised.

Lucas nodded.

"Come on," she wrapped an arm around his back, his going around her shoulders, "Let's get something to eat."

And the voices that emplore,
"You should be doing more,"
To you, I can admit,
That I'm just too soft for all of it
