Burn After Reading

This is a genuine thanks for these lessons learned,

And for holding me down to ascend higher.

Soon you'll find that these bridges burned,

Will make you regret being such an awful liar.

You taught me how to surrender—for that, I'm grateful.

Think about the day we met, touching shoulders at life's station.

We were right, our meeting was indeed fateful,

I was always meant to witness your aimless, self-immolation.

Do you hear the sound of the bell's toll?

It resembles every keystroke—every word spoken and not.

Once again, I've played my role.

And now that we're done, I want you to look at what you've wrought.

Was it worth it, the pain you caused?

Words once meant for another, but now for you.

All our progress made is forever paused.

But now I'm free, and you'll return to the human zoo.

Don the shackles of your worst vices,

And let the pain sink into your fragile wrists.

Curse your luck and cry for how steep the price is.

Your name is just another on a series of long lists.

You chose to play with glass,

And gladly worshiped a false idol.

Now the inevitable has come to pass.

And the irony is that your hubris was suicidal.

You wanted words, and now you have them. This is no longer a poem, it's nothing quite so pretty. This is the finale, and you wrote all the words for me.

"Who does he think he is?"

I'm a wellspring, a heaven-sent devil among false angels.

I'm the mistakes I've made.

I'm more love than you'll ever know.

I'm the decapitated offspring of a stained guillotine.

I'm the pillar that upholds when I stand and destroys when I fall.

I'm the beginning and the end.

I'm the one you'll never miss but will never forget.

And now I'm a hammer to a funhouse mirror, shattering images of wicked doppelgängers.

It's time for change.

If I burn these roses, I'll do so with a smile. If I give them, their recipients will never be cold.

But you wouldn't know, would you?

And now, you never will.

The end.
