Chapter 43 - i wanted to play

Alexia's pov:

We had been in England for a few days training and the the tournament officially started tomorrow on the 6th of July. Today was the 5th. To say I was buzzing was an understatement. I had won the Ballon d'Or last year and was on track to win it again. I knew the talent and class this team had and we could win it. I generally do believe we are the best team in the world but everyone thinks that about their country.

/'tomorrow Lex'/ car said as we linked arms walking back to our room to get ready for training.
/'I know are you ready?'/ I asked already feeling the butterflies in my stomach and I could tell she could feel them to.
/'so ready everyone won't know what hit them'/ she said smirking.
/'you bet they won't'/

We all collapsed on the floor after a very intense session. Jorge was overworking us. The tournament started tomorrow and we should have been doing light work or relaxing not pushing ourselves to the limit. We had a game on the 8th in 3 days and needed our strength and energy. We had been working all day with very little breaks and this is what it had been like the whole camp.
/'Girls get up and go again in the same teams'/ coach said but none of us moved.
/'UP NOW'/ he yelled and we all slowly got to our feet and moved to our places.

Our play was sloppy. It was like the 10th time we had done this and we were getting worn out. I was dribbling with the ball but I was so tired and stumbled over the ball and onto my face. As I tripped I heard the one thing that no one ever wants to hear as an athlete. I head a pop in my left knee. I screamed in pain as I hit the floor black spots blinding my vision.

Carmeñ's pov:

It felt like the world slowed down as Lex hit the floor. The scream that she let out broke my heart into a million pieces. I ran to her side a few others doing the same. Tears were pouring out of her eyes her face screwed up in pain as she cried. I held her hand and held her close to me gently whispering to her.

Finally the medics came running with stretchers and all the kit. I had to move away but I sit held her hand from the behind the medics all crowding around her. Mapi started at Jorge yelling at him saying it was all his fault but Lelia came and pulled her away. We all agreed with what Mapi was saying but didn't want to be cut. This tournament was to important to miss. I tuned back to Lex now on the stretcher as they went to pick her up.
/'car come on love she needs to go'/ Jenni said trying to pull me away.
/'no I'm going with her!'/ I said not letting go of Lex's hand. I didn't realise I was crying but I could taste the tears. Jenni said something to the medics and they nodded. I was allowed to go with her inside.

I never let go of her hand even when she was layed down on the chair things her legs in front of her. I came to her side once the medics had moved and I hugged her tightly.
/'it popped car I heard it'/ she said and sobbed into my shoulder.
/'hey no your gonna be okay'/ I said and she pulled me up to sit next to her on the bench. I lay next to her soothing her and gently rubbing her arm.

The medics came back in after doing some scans and checks to tell us what this is and what it means. We lay next to each other her still hugging me tightly not letting go.
/'Miss Putellas we have the results back'/ our head medic said. Lex's head shot up and she looked at the man in desperation.
/'I'm so sorry to tell you that you have torn your ACL'/ he said and Lex sobbed into my shoulder. I held her close and rubbed her back trying to provide a bit of comfort.
/'how long do you think she will be out for'/ i asked the man.
/'well it depends if she want the surgery here in England or in Spain'/

/'Lex I will come with you'/ I said to her as the man had went out to inform Jorge.
/'what'/ she said looking at me with red eyes.
/'if you want to do your surgery and rehab in Spain I will come with you'/ I said seriously meeting her eyes.
/'but it's your first-'/ she started.
/'I don't care Lex I won't let you be alone and I can't do the euros with out you'/ I said tears falling and she started crying as well.
/'you won't have to okay I will stay here for the euros and i can still do everything you do except play'/ she said.
/'I don't wanna play without you'/ I said and rested my forehead on hers.

We talked it through once we had both calmed down a bit. She wanted to have her surgery here and start her rehab while we trained. We got it all booked in and on the 8th she would have her surgery at St George's hospital. I could tell she was heartbroken. She had worked so hard for this tournament and had had suck and amazing season.

Me and Lex sat on her bed wrapped in each others arms. We had just FaceTimed Eli and Alba to tell them what had happened. We had decided to go down for dinner with the rest of the girls. She had this massive knee brace on and crutches and was quite slow on them.

We took the lift down and everyone clapped as she walked in.

'Pepino!' I said as Patri came over. (Cucumber). It was a nick name me and Lex came up with because she always wants cucumber wherever we go.
/'Tiss'/ she said and hugged me from the side. Most of the girls were crowding around Lex so I went to get food and was standing near.
/'are you okay'/ she asked and I nodded but not very convincingly.
/'it's okay if your not okay'/ she said with her arm still around my shoulders and my arms around her waist.
/'I will be okay'/ I said and she kissed my hair. Another pair of arms joined our hug and I looked to see Pina grinning at us.
/'what'/ she said as me and Patri both looked up at the same time making us laugh.

Jorge came in a few minutes later.
/'so we have all heard the unfortunate news about Alexia but that won't stop us. Irene you will stay as captain but since Alexia can't play, I have decided on 2 vice captains. Patri and Carmeñ.'/ he said and Lex cheered and clapped for us. Pina and Aitana started ruffling my hair or picking my stomach making me go red in embarrassment.

'Are you okay though?' Jessie asked me. We were FaceTiming while a few others we're watching a film in Mapi's room.
'Well it's my first euros and I don't get to play it with Lex' I said.
'I know Lee but she will still be their just won't play' she said trying to comfort me through a screen.
'I miss you' I said needing a hug from her.
'I miss you to my love'
'Anyway I hear your Vice cap now'

I went into Mapi's room to see the a few of the girls spread out on the bed and floor. I plopped down next to Ona and let out a sigh. She opened her arms for me sensing my need for a hug. I was a big hugger and I liked physical contact. I happily lay in her arms while she gently rubbed my arm. Ona was one of my best friends and she could always read me well.

I lay next to Lex slowing falling asleep as she ran her finger through my hair.
/'I'm sorry'/ she whispered and I looked up to her confused.
/'I won't be able to play with you for your first euros'/ she said tears in her eyes. I sat up .
/'Lex my love it's not your fault okay I'm so proud of you and it's okay you will be in the stands and your here with me now'/ I said wiping her tears with a sad smile.
/'I know but I wanted to play'/ she said and broke down crying in my arms. My heart broke knowing she was so upset and she didn't deserve this in anyway. She had been preparing so much for this and it was all taken away from her so quick. I comforted her and gently rocked her back and forth with tears in my own eyes.
