The sun slowly rose over the Glade, casting its first golden rays over the familiar maze. Y/n woke up in Newt's embrace, the feeling of his warm presence still as comforting as the first time they shared a hammock together. His presence was truly a solace after losing Minho, Thomas, and Alby. Or at least, I thought it was. I went to work and still struggled to accept that Oliver was the leader. I could hear them calling me 'Newt's girl' instead of just y/n. My ideas were rejected simply because I was Newt's girlfriend. Is that all I'll be in their eyes? Newt's girlfriend?

Finally, I had enough. I went to the doors where a few more guys were waiting, still refusing to give up hope that they were gone. Chuck was among them.

"Hey Chuck!" I said, "Hey y/n," he replied. He sounded tired and sad, making me wonder how long he had been standing there. But before I could ask, Newt arrived. He wanted to get those who were waiting to stop and get back to work. "They're not coming back," so I think you should go and get on with your tasks. People shouldn't do it for you," he said. He was kind, but it still wasn't the right time. Eventually, we felt the ground vibrating under our feet. The doors opened, revealing a long corridor leading into darkness. No sight of Minho, Alby, or Thomas.

Newt and I looked at each other. Then Newt looked at Chuck. "Told you, Chuck. They're not coming back," said Newt, and he and the rest of the boys started to head back. I wanted to follow, but I waited for Chuck. He still didn't want to give up. He was right, though because after a few minutes... the boys hadn't even gone far when cheers were heard from Chuck. Minho and Thomas struggle to carry Alby back to the Glade. As soon as they made it through the gates, they laid Alby down, sat on the ground, and caught their breath. "They're back!" I shouted and ran around the Glade, "They're back!" and caught everyone's attention. Everyone dropped their tasks and ran toward the boys, happy to see them return, but also puzzled expressions on their faces. How did they survive?

"Did you see a Griever?" someone asked Thomas, who had never been in the maze before. "He didn't just see one. He killed one," Minho explained. Everyone just stared at each other, in shock. What did he say?

Every Glader gathered around the homestead; we all discussed what to do with Thomas. He did break one of our biggest rules, but that was controversial. Some people looked at him like he was a hero - I was one of them. Gally, however, wasn't.

"Things are changing," Gally said, looking around at the Glader seated in the homestead. "There's no denying that." While he had his little speech on how everything changed since Thomas arrived, I looked at Newt. I hadn't spoken to him all day, except for at the doors earlier. I missed talking to him while working. I missed making excuses to leave the job and sneak away so we could make out. However, now that he was the leader, that had changed as well.

"And then our greenie here has taken it upon himself to go into the maze, which is clearly a violation of our rules here." No one said anything, so I decided to defend Thomas since no one else would do it.

"Yeah, but he saved Alby's life. Why punish someone for saving someone's life? That doesn't make any sense, you shank," I told him. Gally gave me a look. "Oh look, the princess has spoken," said Gally, and the rest of the Gladers laughed.

"Princess?" I asked him.

"Newt is the prince, and you're his princess," he said.

I looked at him with disgust. "Yeah, but the princess happens to be right, Gally," Frypan said. "Please stop calling me that," I said, but no one heard me. "He did save Alby's life," Frypan continued.

"Did he?" Gally asked. "Alby doesn't look like he's having the best time."

He had a point there. Alby had been in medcare ever since they found him. He screamed in pain from time to time, which was painful to hear.

"For three years, we've coexisted with these things..." Gally explained, looking at Thomas. "And now you've killed one of them," said Gally. He waited for someone to make a response, but no one seemed to agree with him. It was like he wanted to punish Thomas, even though I could understand where he was coming from. "Who knows what that could mean for us."

"What do you suggest we do?" Newt finally spoke up.

"He has to be punished," Gally spoke up. There it was; he wanted to punish Thomas. The rest of the Gladers protested, and I even stood up and walked over to him, standing in front of him because it looked like Gally was ready to punish him right here and now.

"Minho," Newt said, and the Gladers went silent. Minho looked at Newt. "You were there with him. What do you think?" Everyone was silent, waiting to hear the keepers of the runners' opinion.

"I think," Minho started, "in all the time we've been here, no one has ever killed a Griever before." Everyone was looking at Thomas, who had pushed me aside, a way of saying he didn't need me to protect him. "When I turned tail and ran, this dumb shank stood behind to help Alby. Look, I don't know if he's brave or stupid," he said. People made some chuckles. Thomas looked down at his knees. "But whatever it is, we need more of it. I say we make him a runner," Minho said. Thomas looked up at him. Everyone started talking to each other again, some were against it, some were not. "Minho, let's not make the jump here, alright," Frypan said. The one person who liked the idea the most was Chuck. He even started to chant Thomas's name, but when no one joined him, he stopped.

"If you wanna throw the newbie a parade, that's fine," Gally spoke up, making everyone fall into silence. "But if there's one thing that I know about the maze, it's that you..." Gally was interrupted by the greenie alarm. New greenie? The meeting ended, and everyone ran towards the box. Newt and Gally first.

Newt and Gally opened the door to the box, and Newt jumped in so they could retrieve the greenie. A chorus of questions filled the air as everyone began pushing forward to get a look into the small opening. No one could see what was down there, and we were all curious. "Hold on!" Gally yelled, silencing everyone. "Just hold on!"

"Well, what's wrong?" someone yelled back.

Alby stood up. "Two newbies in the same month," he said, almost in a whisper. "Now this. Two years, nothing different, now this." Then, for some reason, he looked straight at Thomas. "What's going on here, Greenie?" How should Thomas know? Thomas stared back, confused, his face turning bright red, his gut clenching. "How am I supposed to know?" Yes, exactly what I was thinking.

"Why don't you just tell us what the shuck is down there, Newt?" I called out. There were more murmurs and another surge forward.

"You shanks shut up!" I yelled to get the curious boys quiet. "Tell 'em, Newt." Newt looked down in the box one more time, then faced the crowd gravely. "It's a girl," he said.

Everyone went silent. Then I broke it.

"YEEEESSS!" I screamed out of joy. Finally, I wasn't the only girl here. Finally, someone who understands me. Newt shushed me again. "That's not the bloody half of it," he said, then pointed down into the box. "I think she's dead."

Well, there goes that dream.

"Dead? What do you mean dead?" I asked him and helped them to get the body up. She did look awfully familiar, brown long hair. Looked kinda tall. It was like I had seen her but didn't know where. Suddenly, the girl woke up and then locked eyes with Thomas. She looked at him as if he was responsible for what happened here. Then her eyes went to me. She recognized me too... she closed her eyes before I could say anything.

"Can't be a coincidence. Two days, two Greenies, one alive, one dead," Gally said to himself. "We get it Gally, you found it creepy," I said, getting tired of his suspicion of Thomas.

"You don't think I..." Thomas couldn't even finish the sentence.

"Slimit, Greenie," Newt said. "We're not sayin' you bloody killed the girl."

"I swear she doesn't look familiar at all," he said anyway. He'd had enough accusations. Newt and Gally looked at me, and all I did was nod. I knew that they were going to ask me if I knew her too. And I did recognize her.

"You know her, y/n?" Newt asked me, and I nodded again. "I don't know where, but she looks familiar." That's when I noticed a piece of paper lying next to her, a piece of it lying under her arm.

"What is that?" I asked, pointing at it. Newt grabbed the paper and read it out loud.

"Everything is going to change."
