"alright ladies. last weekend was kind of a let down huh? trio didn't win, group didn't win, paige's solo is the only one that had a win." she pulled the first picture off the pyramid. "nia. you were part of the losing trio."
nia nodded.
"next, mackenzie. you didn't wow me." then she pulled off another picture. "chloe. you started to forget that group dance on stage and that should not happen at your age."
"kendall. you had no emotion in the group dance. unacceptable mistake. next, we have brooke. you did good, you weren't part of the winning group but i'm so proud of how you did. maddie, you did good in the group dance and you had the trio worry about, but you did it flawlessly." she shrugged. "your solo was second, and i was happy with that. you had a week."
"on top is paige. winning solo! good job. maddie, this week, you will be doing a solo again. it's called 'in my heart'." the girls clapped. "paige, you will also have a solo this week! it's called 'cheerleader' and you'll be portraying a cheerleader. it's a little different then a normal solo. chloe and kendall, you will be going head to head. chloe, your solo is called 'red queen', kendall, yours is 'queen of hearts'. may the best queen win."
kendall and chloe gave each other a hug.
"the group dance is called 'hurt them first'. it's a jailbird number, very chicago. there will be a prop." the mothers groaned. "now, this week is a bit different than you're used to. we are going to compete, but i have something else for you girls."
the girls stared at abby, anxiously waiting for what she was going to say.
"we are also going to be attending a joffrey ballet audition!" the girls began to holler. "now, we don't take much ballet but i believe with your training, you will be able to show them what you can do. that being said, we'll be starting today with a ballet class. everyone get changed into your leotard and tights and get out here!"
the girls scurried away to get changed.
"paige and brooke come here for a minute." abby summoned them over. "your mom is flying in today, right?"
"yeah her flight lands at like 3:30 or something." paige explained. "she's gonna stay out of the studio, but she will be at the competition."
"ok. i don't want you girls to be worried, paige, you have a solo this week. focus on that. she and i talked and worked out some of our issues and i think we'll be getting along just fine." abby smiled. "now go get changed."
"thank you miss abby!" paige and brooke each gave her a quick hug.
once the girls had changed into their leotards and tights, the ballet class progressed nicely. abby continuously complimented paige on her technique, which made her beam as she had been practicing her technique and strength extensively since she became the favorite.
after ballet, it was time for solos. chloe and kendall practiced their solos on the side while abby taught maddie her solo. paige ran the music since her private was after maddie's.
"maddie i don't know what is going on with you, but this solo is a HOT mess. you need to get it together or you're going to pay for it on stage." maddie nodded. abby high-fived her and sent her to the next room to practice without distraction.
"paige! your solo is called 'cheerleader', and i'm doing something a little bit different. i'm choreographing it to a competitive cheerleading routine's music. the team is called top gun, and it was their 2018-19 season music." paige was about to explode with excitement. she squealed a little as abby finished talking. "now, it's gonna be long. it's a full 3 minutes instead of 2, so we need to work on your stamina. there is lots of tumbling. i'm including your running layout."
"yes!" paige screamed. "thank you miss abby!"
her rehearsal was amazing. she loved the solo and abby was correcting her one time before she fixed it.
"paige, that was BEAUTIFUL!" abby screamed. "give me a hug!"
abby pulled paige into a hug.
"kendall, chloe, go next door and we're gonna start the group dance soon." they nodded. "paige, stay here a minute."
"paige. i wanted to get your opinion on maddie's solo. what do you think of it?" abby asked. paige was a little alarmed, abby had never asked her for her opinion before.
"well, i think it's pretty. it's what she does really well." paige nodded. abby looked at her.
"do you think she knows it?"
"maddie always picks up quickly."
"i'm worried about her." abby shared. "she's frenetic, and i don't think she's ready to perform. i know you two are very close. if she says anything about feeling overwhelmed or not ready, i want you to tell me."
paige nodded.
"of course miss abby. do you want me to ask her?"
"no, she needs to come to you. i don't want to set her off if she's not already freaked." paige nodded. "don't tell the others i asked. head on over next door, i'll be over in a few!"
"thank you miss abby!" paige couldn't help but think of maddie and her solo. she couldn't help but think that, come competition, everything would be ok.
