The human body typically has seven cervical vertebrae which make up your neck. They tend to be flatter, more rounded, and have very small bodies growing in size and shape to transition into the thoracic vertebra. The Atlas is the first cervical vertebra and it articulates directly with the condyles on the Occipital bone. It was so nicknamed because it holds up the "globe" of the skull like the mythological figure Atlas holds up the earth. The Axis is so named because it allows the head to turn using the dens.
