Phalanges of the hand consist of the fingers and the thumb.  The fingers each consist of three bones while the thumb consists of only two.  The thumb bones are much more robust and the proximal bone has a concave surface allowing for greater motion.  The shafts of the phalanges of the hand differ from the foot in their cross-sections with fingers having a half-circle shaped shaft and the toes having a circular cross-section.  The finger and thumb bones are highly suceptible to degenerative joint disease and rhumatoid arthritis which causes inflammation on the articular surfaces.
