The ribs are paired bones and humans typically have 12 ribs on each side.  The first and second rib tend to be smaller and more irregularly shaped than the remaining ribs.  The first seven pairs of ribs articulate with the Sternum through a cartilage connection are called "True Ribs."  This cartilage will ossify in old age, often fusing these ribs to the Sternum.  The 8th, 9th, and 10th ribs are connected from the front to the other ribs through cartilage and are called "False Ribs."  The final ribs do not connect with the other ribs and are called "Floating Ribs."  The head of the rib attaches to the spine.

Ribs are typically used in age estimation based on the ossification of the cartilage on the sternal end.
