Humans typically have 12 Thoracic Vertebrae that make up the upper and mid-back. These slowly change as they go down the back to look more like the Lumbar vertebrae. All Thoracic vertebrae articulate with the ribs and thus have costal pits, though the first thoracic vertebra has a whole and a half costal pit which should aid in distinguishing it from the 7th cervical vertebra which has none. Most other Thoracic vertebra have a half costal pit, except for 10, 11, and 12 which have a whole pit.
