Oswald couldn't help but beam, as he and (Y/n) finally got to the large doors that would open to reveal the ballroom beyond. Two black suit clad goons on either side of the ingress, nodding at their boss before the doors were opened. The heads of all those present, who were patiently waiting to meet the new mayor, turning at the movement. All conversation ceasing, as every eye fell on the pair stood in the opening.
At that moment, Oswald couldn't have been prouder. A soft murmur being heard. People speaking to one another behind their hands, as the mayor and the beautiful woman on his arm, made their way further into the room.
He could see the looks from the men, as he and (Y/n) walked by. How their eyes were lingering on the detective's leg that appeared periodically as she seemed to glide through the crowd. How they looked at the plunging neckline that left just enough to the imagination to be tasteful and decent. Oswald quietly promising that if any of these voyeurs decided to get too close, they would find that it would be the biggest, and last mistake of their miserable lives.
"Detective (Y/l/n)............" A smooth voice suddenly said, as (Y/n) and Oswald moved towards the head table. The detective and mayor stopping, as a tall dark-haired man stepped forward. A warm smile pulling at his lips.
"Ed......long time no see.........." (Y/n) replied, as the once forensic science technician took her hand and brought it up to his lips. Oswald's chief of staff ignoring the mayor's glare, as he kissed the female detective's knuckles.
As she had said, it had been a while since she had seen Ed, which she had to admit was a shame really, as even when others at the precinct thought he was a little, well........odd; (Y/n) had always quite liked him. Furthering her belief that she really did just seem to like strange people. But what with him killing Dougherty and then Kringle. Then framing Jim, and finally spending six months in Arkham; only finding himself back on the streets, thanks to Oswald's intervention, she had to think that he was not necessarily the best person to be associated with. Though given that he now held one of the most important positions in the city; that he was Oswald's second in command, there was little chance of her avoiding him. For at least tonight. And given that he was still to let her hand go, it seemed obvious that he didn't want her to avoid him either.
"Far too long. And may I say, you look...........exquisite, this evening." Ed continued. His smile growing, as Oswald pulled (Y/n)'s hand from that of the tall man.
"I already told her that.............."
"No Oswald. You actually said that I looked quite beautiful.......there is a difference. So, thank you Ed..............."
"Yes.......thank you...........Ed...........Now, shall we.............?" Oswald growled slightly, giving Ed one last look best gesturing towards the top table, and the rostrum from which he was to make his speech.
>>------------------------------<<
Alright, this was not what she would normally be doing at Christmas; (Y/n) finishing off her third glass of champagne, as Oswald continued to witter on about whatever it was that he was wittering on about. The whole thing sounding like, blah, blah, blah, to the detective, who was beginning to wonder whether she would have actually been better off at home, after all. The female detective feeling the call of a re-run of 'It's a wonderful life', and a glass of eggnog.
"He was only supposed to speak for five minutes........" A voice came from beside her. (Y/n) turning to look at Ed; the tall, slender man pushing his glasses back up his nose, before offering her another glass of champagne.
He looked so different to the awkward forensic technician that she had known. Ed had always looked a little unkempt, as if he needed a good meal and his clothes ironed. The off-white lab coat, never doing him any favours. But now, now he looked so neat, so well-tailored and distinguished. And she couldn't forget, handsome............
"Well, after all the campaigning, I suppose that its only right that the penguin gets to puff out his chest a little. It's a long way from being Fish Mooney's umbrella boy, to being mayor or this dump of a city. And are you trying to get me drunk, Ed................?" (Y/n) enquired, as she took a sip from her glass.
"If it means that you will dance with me later......then yes. As I said, you do look quite exquisite.............." Ed continued, as he moved his chair a little closer to her and chinked his glass against hers.
"Dance? Well, I think that you will have to take that up with Oswald; especially since this has turned from a supposed protection job, to a date............."
"A date...............?"
"Yes. Not that I will ever admit that to Harvey if he were to ask. Lord knows he would never stop teasing me; but it would appear that our new mayor has noticed me far more than I thought. And given this dress, it is really hard to miss me most of me........." (Y/n) replied, rolling her eyes, as Ed's eyes, not so subtly dropped to her cleavage.
"Indeed..............." Ed agreed. The two suddenly clapping, as Oswald finally finished his speech. The mayor turning and smile at (Y/n), before taking in the rest of the applause. The detective having a feeling that this really was going to turn out to be a very different kind of Christmas. Not sure whether being on a date with Oswald, and perhaps dancing with Ed, would put her on Santa's nice list, or.........his naughty one.
