LEXECOM majority bloc to file impeachment raps vs USC pres, VP
by Reynard Falcon

THE MAJORITY bloc in the Legislative-Executive Committee (LEXECOM) is set to file an impeachment complaint against University Student Council (USC) President Priam Torres and Vice President Valeria Encarnacion in their next session.

The bloc is composed of College Student Council (CSC) chairpersons from College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Criminal and Justice Education (CCJE), College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), and College of Nursing (CON).

CBA-CSC Chairperson Alaric Esteban, who concurrently serves as the LEXECOM chair pro tempore and majority leader, said they are done verifying the information that can be used as a ground for impeachment against Torres and Encarnacion.

"We're now ready to move forward with the complaint," Esteban said. "It's unfortunate that we have to do this to a sitting USC president and vice president, but sometimes we must make the tough choices to make things right."

He revealed that the USC tried to coerce a member of his bloc to vote in favor of the then-Freedom of Information motion. Even if their bloc intended to vote in the affirmative all along—which would make the alleged coercion unnecessary—Esteban said that the USC's behavior to get what they want is "greatly alarming" and "undermines the integrity of the council."

"No student-leader must coerce another to vote in favor or against a motion," Esteban added. "It's the view of the majority bloc to defend the democratic process observed in our student government against those who threaten it."

Meanwhile, USC Press Secretary Rowan Oronce said they welcome any complaint lodged against them.

"We don't have a copy yet so we don't know the specifics of the impeachment complaint, but we respect the right of Alaric and other chairpersons to question us and our style of governance," Oronce said during a press briefing. "Let them file it. Let it be discussed and decided in the proper forum."

Should the impeachment complaint prosper, it's going to be the first time that both the president and vice president will be impeached.
