"What the hell is going on?" asked Taehyun.

Kai couldn't think. Or maybe he was thinking too much. His mind and heart were both racing. Amatorians were always, always careful with their missions. Even an amateur like Kai had never made such a slip before. Never.

"Kai, I asked what the hell is going on?!" pressed Taehyun. "What is this mission? Amoretto? What do you mean use me?"

"Taehyun, we were talking about a game..."

Taehyun shook his head.  "No, you're not. I know you're not talking about a game. What I know that I was right to be suspicious of you too. I knew something was off with you. Something just didn't make sense. How were the two of you always there whenever there was something to do with Yeonjun and Soobin? The college excursion happening so early in the year, you had something to do with it, right? Beomgyu saying he was in love with Yeonjun and approaching me for tuitions, that was to 'use me' right? But use me for what? What possible use you could have for me? The five of us being in the same room, that was also done by the both of you, right?"

Kai was speechless. What was he supposed to say? Beomgyu already left, maybe, he would've known how to deal with it.

Taehyun looked at Kai, dead straight in the eyes. "What the fck are you?"

Kai took a step closer to Taehyun. "Will you believe me if you told you?"

"That's for me to decide."

"Beomgyu and I are...in a sense, cupids. We come from this land called Amoretto, the land for cupids and we get sent on missions to unite humans and make them fall in love with each other, to help them find their soulmate. And once we're done with our mission, we return back until we get another mission and hence the cycle continues. And this time Beomgyu and I were tasked on a timed mission, to get Yeonjun and Soobin together."

Kai looked at Taehyun, trying to read his facial expression. He couldn't get a read on what was going on Taehyun's head. Reluctantly, Kai tapped into Taehyun's thoughts.

This is bullshit.

Kai felt his throat constrict. He felt it hard to breathe. This wasn't going to work out.

Kai walked closer and closer to Taehyun. He looked at Taehyun and gently cupped his cheeks. Taehyun looked Kai, his face devoid of any expression.

Softly, Kai whispered. "And we also have some manipulative powers. We can read some minds, teleport and such. We can also...manipulate memories."

Taehyun's eyes widened. He tried pushing Kai away from him but Kai's grip was firm.

Kai felt his heart being torn into a million pieces. He didn't want to do this. He felt his entire being aching.

Taehyun grabbed Kai's arm which was holding his left cheek. "I believe everything, don't do it."

Please don't do it, I believe everything.

Kai closed his eyes, crying. Gently, he reached into Taehyun's memories.

Taehyun meeting Beomgyu for the first time in the lecture hall, asking him for tuitions.

Kai's brief conversation with him about sunny days.

Beomgyu's disastrous tutoring lessons and Kai picking him up that day

Beomgyu, Taehyun and Yeonjun going out drinking.

Beomgyu bringing Taehyun along to take drunk Kai back and making hangover soup

Taehyun and Beomgyu's random conversation

This moment.

"I'm sorry."

Taehyun felt a sharp pain in head, similar to splitting headache. The next second, he collapsed on the floor, right at Kai's feet.

Kai's breathing was slow and shallow. He looked at Taehyun's unconscious body on the group. Usually, tampering with memories wouldn't cause a collapse but Kai had removed a huge chunk of memories...along with huge amounts of attachment. As he went through Taehyun's memories, Kai had sensed Taehyun's incredible amount of fondness for Beomgyu. A fondness that Kai had always craved from humans.

Kai took a couple of steps back and slumped down. Laying his head on his knees, he began sobbing. He had sworn to himself that he would never manipulate a human. He would never alter their memories or read their thoughts, he didn't have the right to do it. He felt like he had sinned. Kai would never forgive himself for this, but he didn't know what else he was supposed to do. What if Taehyun went and told Yeonjun? Kai didn't want another grey at his hands. He didn't want to strip two people of finding love. He didn't have it in him to do something so cruel. But what he did right now was just a cruel.

He erased someone's memories. What right did he have to do that?

Kai got up from where he was and picked Taehyun up. Having his memories erased meant that Taehyun would probably have a terrible headache the next day. But Kai's job wasn't done.

It was 1:12 am when Kai walked into his room. He looked around. There was no Beomgyu in sight.

Kai gently placed Taehyun on his mattress. He stared at Taehyun for a split second. Taehyun would wake up the next time and he would have no idea who Kai and Beomgyu were.

Kai stared at Yeonjun and Soobin's sleeping figures, sleeping on mattresses that were the furthest away from each other.

He walked over to Yeonjun and crouched in front of him. Once again, he closed his eyes as he sorted through Yeonjun's memories. He carefully selected ones which indicated any sort of connection between Kai, Taehyun and Beomgyu.

And then he walked over to Soobin and did the same thing.

Exhausted, Kai walked out of their room and decided to take a stroll along the road. He was still hurt, he was still in pain.

Kai wasn't always like this. When he was born, Kai initially wanted to become the best Amatorian ever. Just like every other kid. He wanted to successfully do his mission and come back. He wanted people to compliment and revere him for his work.

But when he was 16, his parents had returned from the human world with a different aura about them. When Kai asked them what the issue was, his parents merely looked at each other and smiled.

Kai looked at the starry sky, he could still vividly remember that day. The day he saw what two people in love actually looked like.

His parents had told him that they were leaving Amoretto and going to live in the human world. Obviously, it came as a huge shock to Kai and he started crying, asking them to take him with them. His parents had told him that they only wanted him to live in the human world when he had also found someone to love.

His parents word had stuck with so hard that every mission to earth, he always looked for his one. Amatorians were insistent that they were created for the purpose of harboring love for others but Kai believed that even for them, love existed. You just had to go out of your way to find it, like his parents did. He believed that true love existed.

If true love existed, why did Amatorian have to intervene? Why manipulate humans to fall in love?

Well, that was Kai's belief anyways. Something no one in Amoretto would even understand.

Kai started crying. He didn't want these powers. He didn't want to be an Amatorian. He didn't want to manipulate humans. He didn't want to read their thoughts or erase their memories.

As Kai cried alone in the dark foothpath, he simply wished to be human.
