Snow stared at the fields, the fresh smell of oil hitting him like a stone wall. His face scrunched.
Back again. Here.
He shifted his weight when he felt Prongs slipping off his shoulder. Hell, why couldn't he wake up?
Couple days after they arrived, Snow camped on the outskirts near a small lake, trying to nurse Prong back. He had been asleep for almost three days.
Surely he's not dead? Snow turned his head, staring at Prong's closed eyes.
I'd give a couple more days.
Snow faced forward as he marched into District 12, into Lucy Gray's old cabin she had shown him. There he would rest until Prong finished his business, then he would go back home and reunite with his family. That was the plan at least.
He doubted they would let him back into the Capitol easily as he had done before. Security would have gotten stricter, especially when the other boy had run away.
Before the Hunger Games, Snow recalled, a boy had run away and the Capitol had shut down every entrance or exit known in the Capitol. Even going as far as looking for secret tunnels and bombing them close.
A shiver ran down his spine. No, he couldn't possibly stay anywhere other than the Capitol. It was the only home he'd ever known.
Snow shook the thought from his mind and trudged forward. It would only take a few days.
The fields were definitely brighter than the Capitol, more natural, and the smell of flowers lingered in the air.
While it's a district, it doesn't disappoint when it comes to the natural environment.
Soon, the sound of clanging reached his ear, and the smell of flowers quickly changed to an unpleasant smell. Coal, the district's specialty.
As Snow walked through the small towns, he noticed kids playing around while the adults were selling various things ranging from vegetables to pieces of cloth.
To feed the kids? Snow wondered. Moving through the crowd, he headed toward the lake. After a few minutes, he reached the lake and slumped down on a log. He pushed Prong off his back and propped him horizontally.
A breeze passed by, rustling his hair which was almost as long as it was before he was forced to cut his hair. Snow soaked in the sun, something he never had time to do in the Capitol. Weather of the Capitol was pleasant but never clear enough to see the sun.
A groan slipped from Prong's mouth as his eyes fluttered open. The boy slowly sat up, taking in the scenery.
"We're at District 12?" He asked, looking around.
"Yeah," Snow said, "The views nice."
Prong nodded in agreement. Dusting off his pants, he stood and turned around, facing Snow. "I'm going out tonight to see what I can get about the rebels. Stay inside and see what supplies you can gather for the night."
"Aren't you supposed to be younger than me?" Snow asked, chuckling as he shook his head.
"I don't think that matters right now," Prong crossed his arms. "Where even are we in District 12? I doubt anyone's gonna just let you in. You're too noticeable."
"Thanks," Snow replied dryly. "For reminding me I'm a "convict"."
Ignoring him, Prong trudged up the hill a toward the cabin. "Im leaving past 8, when it's dark. Do what you do I guess."
Snow rolled his eyes as his eyes trailed back to the lake. It was just until this "mission" was over that he could get his legacy back and things would go the way it used to.
A smile tainted his lips.
President Snow.
The name had swarmed his mind from the beginning of the mission. When he would get home, he would join the academy again and eventually build everything up as he had in the past. He would reclaim everything he had lost.
His family.
His legacy.
His life.
