Elijah
I get back to the office thirty minutes over what I had intended and what my secretary tells me makes me have a pseudo heart attack.
Kristian White took a company car. Without my permission.
To pick up my children. I actually can't breath properly. At all.
My forearms become corded with veins as I grip the steering wheel of my car,I'm violating multiple traffic laws as I make it to my drive through. All through the acres of land that were set aside for the royal descendants.
The mansion that was built for Kings of spring to come. Its my home and despite its size there's not a room I haven't been in. When my father passed away it was legally transferred to my name as tradition. Signifying the start of my reign. It will forever be the place I dream to be at when I'm at my lowest points, when loneliness caves into the walls of my soul. The sight of it fills me with relief. But not today as I tail one of my company cars into the drive through.
He drives slowly. Another thing to add to the list of things about him that frustrate me.
He parks just outside the garage and I get out as soon as I park behind him. "Mr Lewis,I didn't think you were-"
"Get inside the house and don't come out until I tell you to."I tell my sons as soon as they can hear me,Oliver looks up at Kristian before he follows his brother,
"I told you he'd get mad."he whispers to him and Kristian gives him a sweet smile before taking his hand off his back, gesturing for him to follow his angry brother. When the door shuts I turn to him,
"What did I tell you your job was this morning."I demand stalking towards him, just for a second confusion that comes after ambush. Innocence and helpless defence. I almost give in,but these are my children. I don't need someone doing too much for my boys.
"To be your assistant."he answers, standing stiffly in front of me. My heart is twisting, ripping at seams I once considered invincible. But my rage keeps shoving my forward, raising my voice higher.
"I didn't ask you to make me terrible coffee or pick my children from school. I asked you to do one job and you keep on messing up. Half of the time, you look like you don't even know where you are. Who you are."Something in the air shifts. I think it's him. I look into eyes that once reminded me of flames are sunken. Extinguished.
But I keep pushing.
"I know who I am."he tells me with conviction, but it's just a whisper. Like he doesn't believe it,
"Your job isn't the place to figure it out,Kristian."he stands there looking up at me with tears swirling around in his eyes trying to say something but he just blinks. The sun disappears into a blanket of clouds putting the both of us into darkness,
"You were late,I waited after the meeting but you never came and-"
"Did I ever ask you to?"
"But they were probably waiting on you,and you- "he points to the house,
"I was coming. They can handle a couple more minutes. You had no right to pick them up."
"So you just make them wait for you everyday? Until they're finally up on the list of priorities?"he pleads with me,
"Yes,like the same list you need to have. And they're sensible enough to understand, unlike you."Everything goes quiet and I start to notice everything. How a tear already fell from his eyes. The way he's shaking.
I want to pull back and apologise.
I need to set boundaries.
The way my heart is twisting and pulling from each edge and space is breaking from the inside out.
"Who hurt you?"he tells me,so quiet only I can hear it. And it does a number on me. He shakes his head in disapproval ever so slightly,"You really are a jerk."he tells me,his lips lifted so he can keep it from trembling,
