Conspiracy

They were wondering if this had something to do with the treason theory from the last chapter.
EMPRESS' CHAMBERS
CRIMSON SILK — hugging her frame looked better than she'd first anticipated. The maids behind her couldn't stop gushing as they fumbled over her hair, letting the magenta waves cascade down her back loosely. Penelope looked at her reflection in the mirror — The dark Shadows beneath her eyes far too lifeless for a woman being decorated like she was a bride.
'Huh, why am I being dressed up like this?' Penelope thought as she watched the screen show as she dressed up. Finding no useful information about the situation from the previous situation.
The time for the audience with the Emperor had come and Penelope didn't even realize. It must be to discuss the matters with the mage guild, she was certain of that.
Everyone leaned a little forward to the screen waiting to see how the discussion was going to go. Wondering if the Emperor is going to take his wife's side Penelope, or is he going to believe his subjects and suspect his wife. They hoped except Penelope that the Emperor would take her side. While Penelope knows that there is a big possible chance that the Emperor will suspect her, she doesn't expect much from him and just watches quietly as the scenes unfold.
She had earlier received Felix's message — Saying he had found a letter addressed to her in the pile of the papers that were meant for the Emperor — something he had not looked into, respecting her privacy, and brought the letter to her untouched.
The Duke and Reynold respected the night even more for his action, as they wondered what happened to the maid that put the letter in the pile. They wonder if she was still alive because they haven't seen her since. Emily thought Felix was a great person for respecting her master's privacy. Penelope was surprised by his respect and that he did not question what was inside the letter. She had a small hope that maybe Felix can be one of her people that stays by her side just like Emily.
It was the same letter Callisto had sent her. And although Penelope had just given a smile when Felix said it must have been accidentally slipped into the Emperor's papers — she couldn't shake off the feeling that someone had looked through her things, and done so intentionally.
'Which was intentionally' they all thought.
And albeit the first conclusion that comes to one's mind could be that the person wanted to create a rift between her and Claude — something about the intricacy of the action made her think it was something more than that. Something worse.
They all haven't thought about what was the actual purpose of putting the letter into the pile of paper. Was it to make them lose trust in one another or was it to ruin the alliance between the two Empires. Or was it something else, the intention wasn't clear but they have yet to know who did it or who that maid worked for.
She had asked Emily to keep an eye on the coming and going of sirens in her Chambers closely.
And the issue on the border too ... The timing of it all was far too convenient to be brushed aside; it was almost as if the person behind it all was trying to bait them. To make them believe there was something going on in the castle.
'To distract them from the border problems' The Duke and Derrick thought to themselves. Penelope thought 'if the problems of the border go wrong while the emperor thinks she is being unfaithful, they can push the blame on her and cause tension between the two Empires.'. Penelope frowns at the idea of this and the idea of her probably dying, why does this bullshit keep happening to her. She is so done with this.
